In the days before his last tournament, the Davis Cup, Rafa Nadal did not know if he would play and left the answer in the hands of the captain, David Ferrer. The doubt has been cleared up and the 38-year-old manacorí, who retires from tennis this week, will play the first singles of the competition against the Netherlands this Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. at the Martín Carpena in Málaga.
In this way, the Spaniard will open the series against the Dutch against Botic van de Zandschulp. There are two precedents between the two, dating back to 2022, corresponding to the round of 32 at Roland Garros and the round of 16 at Wimbledon. Both were favorable for Nadal, who won without giving up a set.
The second match of the series will be played by Carlos Alcaraz, who will face the leader of the Netherlands team, Tallon Griekspoor (number 40 in the ATP ranking). Both have faced each other four times and the Murcian also won all of them without losing any rounds.
In this way, Rafa Nadal will once again play a singles match before retiring, something he had not done since July 29 in official competition (it was at the Paris Olympic Games against Novak Djokovic). He will also defend the ‘Armada’ again five years later, since he had not competed in the final phase of the Davis Cup since 2019, when Spain won its sixth Saladera.
