The birth of a magic formula
The history of Coca-Cola is a fascinating story of how a chance experiment and a series of coincidences gave rise to one of the most popular and recognized drinks in the world. Without a doubt, serendipity played a fundamental role in the birth of one of the most emblematic soft drinks of the 20th century.
Coca-Cola, that carbonated drink that today is part of the daily lives of millions of people around the world, had a very different origin than we imagine. And far from being simply a soft drink, at the beginning it was closely linked to the world of medicine and pharmacology.
In 1886, in the city of Atlanta (Georgia, United States) a pharmacist named John Stith Pemberton was experimenting with a series of ingredients in search of a remedy to relieve headaches. Among these ingredients were coca leaves and kola nuts, which – it was believed at the time – had stimulant and medicinal properties.
The resulting mixture, a carbonated drink with a sweet and slightly bitter taste, was presented to the public as a “nerve” tonic and a remedy for various ailments, including tiredness, fatigue and depression.
Cocaine has harmful effects on health
Its original formula contained cocaine, an alkaloid extracted from coca leaves, since at that time the scientific community considered it to be a safe and beneficial substance. Cocaine was part of cough syrups and tonic wines, due to its stimulant and anesthetic properties.
However, as it was discovered that it had addictive and dangerous effects, social pressure forced the use of cocaine to be regulated. This caused the Coca-Cola Company to modify its formula in 1903, eliminating cocaine and replacing it with a decaffeinated coca leaf extract.
Despite everything, the drink retained its popularity thanks to its distinctive flavor and an effective marketing campaign, becoming a symbol of American culture.
Asa Griggs Candler, a visionary businessman, acquired the rights to Coca-Cola in 1888 and began marketing it in a more provocative way. Candler understood the potential of the brand, turned it into a mass consumer product, distributing it throughout the United States and, later, the rest of the world.
Despite the time that has passed, its exact formula remains a secret only known to a few people, a mystery that has contributed to generating intrigue and curiosity around the drink.
