This Monday, King Felipe and Queen Letizia presided over the ceremony to hand over the ‘Francisco Cerecedo’ Journalism Award 2024, awarded to journalist Carlos Franganillo by the Association of European Journalists, for “his career as a reference for television journalism in Spain”, as well as “his independence, rigor, ability to innovate television journalistic formats and his vocation for reporting.”
Furthermore, the jury values ”his skill in conveying complex facts of the national and international news to large audiences and its ability to inspire new generations of journalists.
In his speech, the winner had words to remember the thousands of families affected by DANA in Valencia and other Spanish provinces. Franganillo has highlighted how this tragedy highlights the need for information in times of uncertainty and as in this context, the journalist faces the arduous task of providing certainty: “Many times it is difficult to have them immediately. It takes time and work. A time that lies do not need.”
However, despite the challenges, he indicated, “many people, in times of anxiety, will continue looking for the credibility that is built over the years. Because their hopes will depend on reliable information.”
For his part, Felipe VI addressed the Telecinco journalist, congratulating him for the recognition and highlighting him for being a “born innovator.” “His journalism continues with the best heritage of the masters of the trade and connects perfectly well with the new generations, being a reference of credibility through the honesty, objectivity and rigor of its work,” he said.
He has also highlighted that Franganillo tries to be whenever he can “eyewitness of the events” such as in the DANA catastrophe, as a correspondent in Moscow and Washington or covering the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
With this, he has defended “the highest quality” journalism in the context of tragedies such as DANA, claiming that it is in these catastrophes where professionals are obliged to report accurately. Given the dimension of this “tragedy and destruction” it is necessary “recognize the best values of journalism, those that remain unchanged over time, despite the numerous changes to which the media, professionals and the profession itself are exposed,” he indicated.
Finally, the monarch has claimed that journalism is “much more than a tool for the dissemination of news” and that it must continue to contribute “to lighting the way towards better informed societies committed to freedom; and it must, therefore, “help to also overcome the barriers that separate and divide“, he added.
This award is given by the Association of European Journalists (APE) in order to highlight those careers that deserve this honor for their talent, originality, ability to transgress the pressures and influences of the powers and promote freedom of expression. The award, sponsored by BBVA, is endowed with 24,000 euros and a bronze medal molded by Julio López Hernández.
“The Francisco Cerecedo Award aims to honor the most recalcitrant Gauls, the unconquerable ones who survive advice and kindness. With rigor, they challenge the bias of others and tell things not as they happen, but as they see them. Carlos Franganillo is an example of perseverance and renounces stridency,” he indicated the president of the Jury, Rodrigo Cortés.
