Anyone would think that the DANA in Valencia would cover many denialist mouths and make us aware of the climate crisis. None of that: to our surprise, DANA has become a banner of climate denialism. The conspiracy vision of the world as a form of security in times of confusion
Does the DANA destroyer of Valencia have anything to do with climate change? It may be, but for now we only have guesses, experts do not agree and there are no historical records to compare it. Furthermore, what they now call DANA is the “cold drop” of a lifetime. That there have not been torrential rains, floods, floods and deaths in the Levant? And much worse! The problem in Valencia has not been the still-discussed climate change, but rather the fight against climate change: the well-intentioned but sometimes disastrous efforts of environmentalists, scientists and progressive politicians to fight against supposed climate change. It is their environmental policies that have aggravated the damage caused by DANA: the demolition of dams, the renaturalization of rivers, the vegetation that they do not allow to be removed, the reeds that block everything. But if you say it, they call you a denier. They also call you a Francoist if you recognize something obvious: that Franco saved Valencia from this DANA by diverting the Turia along another channel. The problem is not climate change, which also does not exist, but climate fundamentalism, the 2030 Agenda that responds to political and economic interests, and that uses the hoax of climate change to curtail freedoms and establish a new world order. Without ruling out that some atmospheric weapon capable of generating gigantic storms may have intervened in Valencia, behind which Morocco, and even Israel, could be, to punish the pro-Palestinian policy of the Spanish government, which would ultimately be responsible for the more than 220 deaths.
The previous paragraph is like a staircase that begins in doubt and ends in delirium. On what step did you stop, from where did you feel uncomfortable, in what sentence did you begin to suspect that I had lost my temper or that I was kidding you? There will be those who stop already on the second line, and those who will continue reading without problems until the middle of the paragraph, and some readers may even reach the basement with a firm step. The problem is that denialism, more than a ladder, looks like a slide. You let yourself fall, pick up speed, can’t stop, and end up embracing the conspiracy. Because he does not fall alone, he is very accompanied, and in the descent he is encouraged by social networks, pseudo-media, sometimes also traditional media, and parties with parliamentary representation. Even the president of the world’s leading power happily goes down the slide followed by his tens of millions of voters!
Anyone would think that the terrible DANA in Valencia, not caused but intensified by climate change, would cover many denialist mouths and make the population aware of the urgency of taking action. None of that: to our surprise, DANA has given more fuel to denialism. As happens with delusional people, conspiracy theorists validate their beliefs with a fact and with its opposite, anything goes, everything adds up, everything confirms their vision of the world. And DANA is the best proof, since it has become a banner of climate denialism. Emilio Santiago, from the CSIC, said it in a information session organized this week passed by the Science Media Center Spain: “Far from experiencing a pedagogical shock that would have placed climate change at the center of the debate, what we witnessed was the birth of conspiracy denialism in Spain, which was a fairly residual phenomenon.”
Climate denialism has seen its opportunity in DANA. These days he is not only hyperactive, but he is also using the shock and pain of an entire country and turning it into hatred towards scientists, environmentalists and progressive politicians, the evil triad. The hoaxes that have circulated these days point directly to those who have been in the climate fight for so many years. Starting with the scientists, AEMET included, who have become targets of the deniers, even with threats, such as Fernando Valladares denounced. Since climate denialism is also inseparable from the rise of the extreme right and its contagion to the traditional right, it takes advantage of the open window to include migrants, NGOs or taxes in the mix, which all add up to the cause, and now They are taking a long time to introduce feminism too.
We can laugh at their nonsense, but little fun. It’s very easy to fall down the slide in the first paragraph. The social unrest and uncertainty that has accompanied us for years makes it a temptation to let ourselves slip, we already saw it in the pandemic. Denialism, the conspiracy vision of the world in which everything fits and everything finds an explanation, no matter how crazy, appears as a form of security in times of confusion. Although it may seem otherwise, you sleep better at night after watching Iker Jiménez’s program.
