Judge Juan Carlos Peinado advances the investigation against Begoña Gómez, wife of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, who is being investigated for alleged crimes of corruption in business and influence peddling. This Monday, the magistrate will take a witness statement from the former Madrid councilor Juan José Güemesa worker from the Instituto de Empresa (IE), and the director of the legal department of the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM).
The case includes, in addition to Gómez, the businessman Juan Carlos Barrabes and to the rector of the UCM, Joaquin Goyache. Recently, the investigation was expanded to accuse Gómez of misappropriation and intrusion, linked to the contracting of software for a master’s degree in the chair that she co-directed at the Complutense.
The former Madrid councilor Juan José Güemes was summoned after the statements of the director of Human Resources of the IE, who indicated that it was he who ordered to hire Gómez as head of the Africa Centeran institution dependent on IE. Gómez held this position between August 2018 and June 2022.
Güemes, current director of the Instituto de Empresa, had an outstanding political career with the People’s Partybeing a counselor in the Government of Esperanza Aguirre and Secretary of State for Tourism under José María Aznar. Although it was investigated in Punic casethe judge closed the case against him.
Another key witness in the investigation is Gabriel Ramon Navarrodirector of the UCM legal department, who signed a report last July. In this document, the university’s legal services report on the actions taken to find out “whether there has been a private use or appropriation of the product”, although they regret that they have not been able to reach a “definitive conclusion”, in particular “due to the lack of collaboration of certain interveners”.
The judge had also summoned Gómez this Monday to inform him in person of the new crimes charged. However, Gómez presented his participation in the G-20 summit in Brazilwhich led the judge to postpone his appearance to December 18.
The investigation focuses on determining whether the hiring of Gómez and his connection with the master’s software could have occurred due to his relationship with Sánchez, which would have represented a case of influence peddling and other irregularities.
