Spain is full of wonderful places full of nature and history to enjoy a rural getaway. And although many times the idea is to take refuge in quiet destinations where we can disconnect from everything, on too many occasions we end up traveling to towns that are truly bustling with people. If what you want is to disconnect from the intense pace to which we are normally subjected, we propose a three for one: Guájar Alto, Guájar Faragüit and Guájar Fondón. Three sister towns known as The Guajares which are located on the coast and very close to Granada. In this semi-unknown region, full of pine and orange trees, you will be guaranteed an anti-stress space to fully recharge your batteries.
Guájar Alto
We begin by visiting Guájar Alto, a white Alpujarra town with steep streets that is located in a unique natural enclave, just like “its brothers.” Of the three, it is the one at the highest altitude. From Muslim times, it is full of patios, tinaos and alleys that preserve their Moorish charm intact. Between the noise of the water from the fountains and the image of the flowers on the balconies you will feel a total connection with the rural life of yesteryear. Among the places of interest is the Church of La Encarnación, in Mudejar style and from the first third of the 16th century, and the viewpoint where impressive views await you.
Guájar Faragüet
Built around the church of San Lorenzo, the old Motril royal road passed through the Guájar Faragüit square. Here you will also find super narrow and labyrinthine streets Moorish in layout, where there is no shortage of traditional tinaos. Get ready to go up and down hills, to discover nooks and crannies between white houses decorated with flowers on the thresholds. One of the details that attracts the most attention is the beautiful paved streets. We advise you to go up to viewpoint of the crossit is an easy walk and you can enjoy great views, both when you arrive and during the tour. This is the path that connects Guájar Faragüit and Guájar Fondón on foot.
Guájar Fondon
It is the third white town and the one located furthest south of Los Guájares. Also with a Moorish layout and steep streets, it is surrounded by an impressive natural space. You will discover its Arab charm walking through its labyrinthine streets, and of course… going up and down hills. And of course, also in its gastronomy that will make you travel back centuries thanks to a cuisine with a strong Moorish traditionespecially in sweets such as pestiños, roscos or fig bread.
Hiking between nature and historical places
To get the most out of the Valle de los Guájares area, the essential requirement is to put on your boots and be ready to walk. Because in addition to enjoying these three towns, another attraction of the trip is immersing yourself in the nature that surrounds them.
To get to know the valley in depth there is a path of about 18 kilometers that is circular and has moderate difficulty. In addition to delighting in impressive views and breathing fresh air, you will discover little-known historical places, such as the Almohad settlement of Castillejoa fortified town that is dated between the 13th and 14th centuries and is located between the towns of Guájar Faragüit and Guájar Fondón. This semi-hidden treasure is at the top of the valley, so be prepared to walk. Two other interesting routes are the Río de la Toba, with an impressive waterfall, and Las Albuñuelas.
