The Santander Maritime Club held its RCMS 2024 Sportsman Gala this Friday, in which the Cantabrian sailor and Olympic champion Diego Botín was awarded this distinction.
As stated by the Maritime Club, The results achieved this year by Botín have supported his candidacy, among which the Olympic gold at the Paris Games stands out – along with Florian Trittel in the 49er class -, the international recognition Rolex Sailor Of The Year, his victory in the SailGP Circuit and the bronze in the 49er world championship.
Among the candidates to be the CMRS athlete were almost twenty nominees in which there are two world titles, five silver and two bronze, in addition to a continental title.
The almost centenary Cantabrian club has also awarded athletes Jane Abascal, Ñeti Cuervas-Mons, Javi Plaza, Pablo Santurde, Claudia Carpintero, Gonzalo Gallo, Toño Piris, Carlos Ruigómez, Luis Arrarte, David Sales, Fernando Echávarri, Pietro Periotto and Guillermo Hidalgo, Álvaro del Arco and the J80 Eurofrits Aviko Newindfoods team as Gallos and Mini Gallos RCMS 2024.

On the other hand, during the Gala, the president of the Maritime Club, Fernando Pereda, unveiled a commemorative bust of Botín, also an honorary member. Thus, the image of the Olympic champion will accompany the existing ones of Toño Gorostegui and Jane Abascal, who also managed to be medalists in the Olympic Games.
