The president of Vox, Santiago Abascal, has been proclaimed this Saturday president of the Patriotas party, a new European alliance led by the Hungarian Viktor Orbán, the French Marine Le Pen and the Italian Matteo Salvini, as well as other far-right formations on the continent. . Patriots is reflected in the European Parliament in the Patriots Group (Patriots for Europe), the third largest group in the European Parliament.
Abascal’s appointment comes less than two weeks after Donald Trump’s victory in the United States elections, a result that will drastically affect the balance between Washington and Brussels. Furthermore, it occurs at a time of tension in the EU, pending the appointment of the new Council due to pressure from the European Popular Party and an extreme right with greater representation than ever since the European elections last June.
The Patriots Party brings together parties from 11 European countries and has 86 deputies in the Community Parliament, representing more than 19 million Europeans, which makes them the third group behind the European People’s Party and the S&D Socialist Group. .
The parliamentary group was born after the last European elections from an alliance between Fidesz, the Hungarian prime minister’s party, together with the far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPO) and the Czech populist Alliance of Dissatisfied Citizens. The French National Group of Marine Le Pen is also part of this alliance, which has been, like Orbán, at the Paris meeting in which Abascal was elected president.
As explained by Vox through a statement, the Patriots group is configured as a fundamental political actor on the European stage and the party faces the challenge of consolidating that alternative majority to the traditional coalition of socialists and popular ones.
“Not in vain, four of the parties integrated into Patriots are the winners of the European elections in four member states: France, Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic,” the Spanish party declared in a statement.
Vox has highlighted that Abascal maintains an “excellent relationship” with other parties and leaders of the American continent which, in its opinion, “will greatly facilitate the lines of common work in defense of the sovereignty and prosperity of nations, mutual respect and defense of freedom.”
