Barcelona City Council has initiated a comprehensive plan to improve coexistence in Plaza Pastrana, located in the Carmen neighborhood of Barcelona. Currently, this area is perceived as a place with unhealthy activities and, according to the council, “it does not invite stay or collective or community use.” The objective of the initiative, in addition to improving coexistence, is also to guarantee comprehensive care for people in vulnerable situations and prevent the consumption of alcohol and other substances among adolescents and young people.
To reverse these “inappropriate” dynamics, since October programs have been developed that They promote new uses of the square. Among them, the ‘Vive la plaza’ program, a project that has already organized the chestnut tree festival, a CrossFit session and a boxing class. Looking ahead to the coming months, aerial circus workshops, storytelling, Zumba classes, and musical bingo, among other activities, are already scheduled.
Likewise, the Horta-Guinardó district has also organized a programming for the Christmas season. There are events such as the Christmas lighting party, which will take place on November 28, workshops, games and musical activities. Several neighborhood entities that have joined the initiative have done the same. For this reason, the square will host cultural, artistic and civic proposals. until January 4, when the space will begin to be prepared for the arrival of the Three Wise Men.
At the same time, since October, field work has been carried out by the Conflict Management Service to find out the opinion of neighbors, users, commercial establishments and neighborhood entities on the dynamics of the square. Besides, They are collecting complaints and proposals door to door to have a complete view of the needs of the entire neighborhood. The data obtained from this action will be used to design the next interventions that will be made in the square.
