He HRH Princess Sofia of Mallorca Trophythe French Olympic Week of Hyères (France), the Dutch Water Week of Almere (Netherlands), the Kieler Woche of Kiel (Germany) and the Long Beach Olympic Classes Regattawhich will take place at the Los Angeles 2028 headquarters, come together and form the new international circuit Sailing Grand Slam (SGS), with the support of World Sailing, the international sailing federation.
This project, which is a first step towards the renaissance of World Cup Serieswill create a global platform to promote the world’s best sailors in the preparation of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, with the aim of reinforcing the visibility, integrity and accessibility of Olympic sailing around the world.
The five regattas share the objectives that World Sailing set out in the Olympic Vision document, in order to increase sailing’s contribution to the Olympic movement.
Together, the regattas are working on the implementation of a series of tools in the current Olympic cycle. The circuit will have a common Race Announcement and Racing Instructions, as well as a centralized website for registration and documentation of the event and for news and updates. It is also intended to implement a comprehensive communication strategy and a common sustainability plan.
Testing new formats
Other areas of improvement include the supply of equipment and the testing of new formats, always aligned with the Olympic format. In this sense, the goal of Sailing Grand Slam is to provide a platform for World Sailing and the Olympic Classes to test new formats and new equipment.
Through this collaboration, the series are also committed to establishing a training program for race officials and to work more closely with World Sailing and the Olympic Classes to introduce the best technological solutions for sailors and the future of race management.
The common Regatta Announcement, with detailed registration requirements and event details, will be available in early December.
