The Unitary Coordinator of Professional Firefighters (CUBP), the majority national association, charged this Wednesday against the Ministry of the Interior of Fernando Grande-Marlaska. Specifically, they accuse him of allowing a “chaotic and uncoordinated” intervention in the rescue and cleanup efforts in the areas devastated by DANA.
From the CUBP they assure that this situation was “foreseeable” given the absence of a regulatory framework that allows the mobilization of more than 20,000 professionals of the body in the national territory. Only 3,000 firefighters have been displaced in the Valencian Community, while the rest were waiting for orders to be able to collaborate in the cleaning work.
“Absolute negligence”
Due to these reasons, the CUBP has called a demonstration for November 30 in Madridwith the intention of demanding the implementation of the Law on the coordination of prevention, fire extinguishing and rescue services. “There is an absolute lack of management and a manifest inability on the part of the Interior to respond to our requests, harming all citizens as this catastrophe has shown,” laments Israel Naveso, president of CUBP.
«It is absolute negligence not to use all the resources you have at your disposal to rescue and save lives from the first minute. Political disputes must be put aside when lives are at stake,” concludes Naveso.
The Coordination Law was already in the amendment period during the last legislature, but His legislative journey was slowed by the early 2023 elections. Already last week, from Workers’ Commissions and just a few days after the passage of DANA, the implementation of this same legislation promoted in 2018 by Podemos was demanded.
«The worst thing is that in each major emergency its necessity is demonstrated, because the entire civil protection system ends up overwhelmed by administrations that have developed a dispersed model in each autonomous community that makes it impossible to work under criteria of coordination and homogeneity,” the union pointed out.
