‘Supercentenarians’
Supercentenarians are people who have reached or exceeded 110 years of age. This group, although very small, attracts the interest of science and society due to its exceptional longevity.
Globally, there are few known supercentenarians, and their existence provides valuable data to investigate aging and the factors that allow such a long life.
Unlike centenarians, who are people who have turned 100 years old, supercentenarians often show unique genetic resistance and healthy lifestyles, although not everyone shares the same habits or conditions. Scientists study both your genes and your environments to understand what contributes to extreme longevity.
Among the common factors observed in supercentenarians are the absence of serious chronic diseases until advanced ages, living in positive social environments, and, in many cases, moderate diets and physical routines.
In Spain, some famous supercentenarians such as Silveria Martín Díaz or Ana María Vela Rubio have reached this milestone, inspiring research and curiosity about the keys to longevity in the country.
Silveria Martín Díaz was one of the oldest people in Spain, with a life that spanned 116 years, from 1907 to 2023. Born in San Juan de la Rambla, Tenerife, Silveria was the mother of six children and lived surrounded by her family and her community, who celebrated it until its last days.
Its longevity and vitality made it a symbol of Spanish longevity and an example for those seeking a long and full life. He passed away in August 2023, leaving a legacy of peace and simplicity.
Along with Silveria and Genoveva herself, other Spanish supercentenarians died in recent years. Emilia Sampedro Barragáns, Galician, reached the age of 113 and died in 2023. Saturnino de la Fuente García, from León, was recognized in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest man in the world before his death in 2022, at age 112.
