Aitana Bonmatí, star of FC Barcelona and the Spanish National Team and recently awarded her second Ballon d’Or, charged against the evolution of the Spanish women’s league and sowed doubts about her future at Barça, a club with which she has just renewed until 2028 .
“I would love for the (Spanish) league to be more competitive, although that I don’t think it’s an excuse to stop progressing individually. and as a team,” said the Catalan player, in an interview with the magazine France Footballorganizer of the Ballon d’Or.
“At Barça,” she added, “we have the feeling that things are moving forward, that they are betting on us. We continue to perform, filling the stadiums. The problem is that when we look at the league it is quite the opposite. We have the feeling that we are stagnating. And for years we have asked for changes that have not come,” he told League F.
She regretted that Spanish women’s football, which reached its peak in August 2023 by lifting the World Cup, has not taken enough advantage of the pull of that success. “In other countries like England, after the Euro Cup (2022), there was a media ‘boom’ that we have not been able to take advantage of here. Hopefully we can change that,” he said.
Regarding her future and after having rejected an offer from Chelsea, Bonmatí made it clear that, although she remains very committed to Barcelona, she does not rule out “the possibility of playing outside of Spain one day.”
“My priority has always been Barça, that’s why I renewed (until 2028). I don’t know if I will be a woman of only one club. I always try to focus on the present. I don’t think I can project myself five, six or seven years from now.. “I don’t know what will happen, nobody knows,” he acknowledged.
Regarding the social impact of women’s football, the player also spoke about motherhood and professional football. “We should all be able to be mothers whenever we want and the world of football must support us in this process. If not, we are left with nothing, without knowing if we will be able to play again after motherhood. We deserve to have that option and security.”he stressed.
In relation to the Ballon d’Or, he explained that the uncertainty this year was greater, since it was not known who would win until the end. “Winning for the second time is also very special, but you already know how everything works,” said the Barcelona player, who highlighted the importance of recognizing midfielders, like herself and the Spanish Rodri, who won the men’s Ballon d’Or. .
“It is a great sign for Spanish football that two midfielders win at the same time. Often, the awards go to the forwards, but the midfield is fundamental,” he said. However, he also expressed the difficulty of matching the achievements of other greats like Messi, who has eight Ballon d’Ors. “There is only one Messi,” said Bonmatí, 26 years old.
