The repressive regime of Azerbaijan hosts the ‘COP of peace’, how was something like this possible?

In the midst of an escalating climate and humanitarian crisis, the annual UN climate summit is being held this year following the re-election in the United States of a president who engages in climate denialism. The host of COP29, which begins today, is once again another authoritarian oil country with little respect for human rights: Azerbaijan.

The COP is proving to be an eco-posture conference that legitimizes the failure of nations to take the necessary steps to ensure a liveable world and future. Climate summits have also allowed human rights to continue to be violated in authoritarian regimes such as Azerbaijan, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, the immediate previous hosts.
