The president of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, assured this Monday that they are working to “adapt the entire structure of the Valencian Government to the reconstruction work of DANA” and has scheduled Thursday, the day on which he will appear in Las Corts, to “start talking about politics” and avoid “hoaxes and shocking and even unpleasant insinuations.”
Mazón has stated that he feels “supported” by the responsibility he has and “of course by my party”, but considers that they are “political reflections” that will also be discussed starting Thursday. “I am not worried or occupied for a single minute with what my personal political position is, because I would also be demonstrating very little responsibility,” he defended.
This was indicated in statements to the media, during a visit to the works carried out by the Generalitat on the CV-33, when asked if some type of remodeling was being proposed in the Consell or if he himself was going to resign. “The entire Valencian Government, everything, in its entirety, is absolutely focused on the recovery, in its entirety. “That we are all giving the best of ourselves for the fundamental, probably the exclusive objective of these days, which is total recovery,” he indicated.
Thus, he referred to Thursday to discuss political issues “because what we do not want, I also think is not appropriate and is not the attention that the people deserve, that 100% of our time is in restoring these roads, in restoring normality and, therefore, when that appearance arrives on Thursday, we will begin to talk about the political part, which in my opinion is not the priority of citizens at this moment.
Mazón has insisted that on Thursday they will give explanations “perhaps in a calmer, calmer manner” because he believes that citizens “also deserve serious explanations, without the misinformation that has existed these days, everything is well organized, everything is well explained, avoiding hoaxes, avoiding also — as a personal reflection, he said — shocking insinuations, I could even say unpleasant.
In any case, he has stated that he is not “in the key of personal defense.” “Perhaps I should have spent more time explaining these things” or addressing “hoaxes or insinuations or speculations that do nothing to help the real work,” he said.
Performance review
Asked if he has a “clear conscience” about the actions of the Generalitat regarding the moment in which the notices were sent to the population, he maintained that he believes that a time will come “sooner rather than later” in which “all administrations, let’s review our actions.”
“And I think we have to assume that mistakes may have been made, without a doubt, we have to do it with all humility,” he stated and maintained that in these days they have reviewed what happened on DANA day “with all the warnings that Yes, multiple warnings were given by the Generalitat Valenciana during the previous days, and during that day as well, until that final alert, based on the latest information that, with respect to the Forata dam, it conveyed to the Government of Spain.”
Along these lines, he has indicated that the crisis management center, Cecopi, was “validly constituted”; He has stressed that the president of the Generalitat “is not a member” of this body and that the members who were there and were fully operational and received the information “do not need a political presence” to make decisions.
“What I tell you is that everyone is going to have to, and we are all obliged, to review the mistakes that could have been made. I think there is one thing that is clear among all of them: perhaps, not having paid more attention to the Rambla del Poyo; “not having had better information, although it is not a strict or exclusive competence, as everyone knows of the Generalitat Valenciana, and having been so attentive to the Forata dam, which fortunately did not break.”
In his opinion, this “is part of all the behaviors that must be reviewed. And all of that must be done and it has to be done with total humility.” Along these lines, he has expressed that “it is not a problem of conscience when everyone did what they could based on the information they received.”
“When the Cecopi was validly constituted, by all the members that had to be there; when dozens of advance notices were given; when that great hydrological revolution arrives in the middle of the afternoon and when it is reported to Cecopi, which includes all the administrations,” he explained. Thus, he has stated that the “revolution” that “makes everything crazy” is when what is happening with the Poyo ravine arrives.
Demonstration in Valencia
“It is not so much a question of conscience or not. What I do have is a lot of pain. There is no doubt about that, because we have it; We are with the Valencians, they are our people, they are my people and that is the sense in which I want to respond,” he indicated and affirmed that he understands the “anger” of the Valencians in the demonstration, a message of understanding that already transmitted after the visit of the Kings to Paiporta and the altercations that occurred.
“Of course we understand the pain, if someone has the slightest doubt they are wrong,” he said, and indicated that they are with the pain of the Valencians although “out of respect for the people who have that pain” he has refused to make ratings of what happened in the demonstration on Saturday in which his resignation was requested or refer to “other things that did happen and that everyone could see.”
Mazón has expressed his support to the 31 police officers who were injured “and who do not deserve that from my point of view.” “Violent behavior, attacks on the Police, attacks of other types that also occurred to property and other types of behavior, I am not going to rate them nor am I going to make evaluations about them,” he maintained.
