“We can all improve in many things, but Yolanda Díaz is the political reference of this space “There where political leadership is recognized, which is in society.” With that forcefulness, Sumar’s Secretary of Organization, Lara Hernández, defended the second vice president this Monday after the federal coordinator of IU, Antonio Maíllo, stated just a few hours before Díaz “needs to improve” his way of managing the relationship with the parties that are to the left of the PSOE.
After months in which Sumar has preferred to ignore the increasingly harsh criticism from IU against Díaz’s management internally and also against his electoral performance, this Monday Hernández changed his tone and was “very clear” in his response to the Maíllo’s words. “We have top-level political priorities to work on” and that is what Sumar should debate, snapped the Secretary of Organization, who was critical of the fact that IU is speaking publicly about internal issues and, in addition, rejected the federation’s latest proposal to revive Sumar: bury its brand and change it for another in Congress.
“The consensus on the challenges we face is absolutely total” within the parliamentary group and the change of brand is not one of the priorities, said Hernández. And the same occurs with the implementation of a primary election mechanism to choose the lists of a future alliance of all parties to the left of the PSOE that could run in the next elections. IU calls for primaries in Sumar to attract Podemos and points to Díaz: “She is a great minister, in other areas she needs to improve”
“Let’s be very clear: we respect IU’s position, but today We are not discussing internal processes or electoral processes.“We are focused on governing, on addressing the situation in the country, and these debates are not the time to hold them,” the leader snapped.
Hernández’s response came just a few hours after Maíllo, in an informative breakfast, appealed to rebuild the unity of the actors on the left of the PSOE as an essential condition to, at least, have options “that the brown wave does not come over Spain” that governments in other Western countries have managed to reach. To this end, the IU leader was in favor of one of the essential conditions that Podemos sets to talk about confluence again: the holding of primary elections.
“We have to reconcile with people who are currently deactivated and, if we do not make decisions that are proportional to the shock, “We risk people not reconnecting.”the IU leader warned in reference to both the loss of electoral support in the last year and the blow that the accusations of sexual assault against his former spokesperson, Íñigo Errejón, have dealt Sumar. Maíllo did not want to discuss, in this sense, the leadership of Yolanda Díaz at the head of Sumar’s leg in the Government. But he was very clear when pointing out that, in IU’s opinion, as the leader of the space on the left of the PSOE, the leader “needs to improve.”
