There are several countries that currently show strong opposition to the possible elimination of gasoline cars (and even hybrids) by 2035. Despite this opposition, the European Commission continues to set a firm path in the inclusion of this law under the pretext of being much more ecological in terms of emissions in the mobility sector. One of the countries that is against its application is the Government of Italy.
This is not the first time that the executive managed by Giorgia Meloni comes to the fore for this reason, because since the arrival of the current Italian prime minister, the country’s government has not taken a step back in this regard. This position joins other regions of the European Union, such as the Czech Republic. However, this pressure offered by both regions could have its end very soon.
The European Union will open the door to synthetic fuels
From Italy they have postulated that eliminating the sale of cars with gasoline engines in Europe could be the end of this industrysince electrification would open the door to a greater presence of China or other regions. However, it is possible that this opposition will find a solution to all this through the admission of synthetic fuels in combustion engines beyond the year 2035.
The European Union has already confirmed on numerous occasions its openness regarding the incorporation of synthetic fuels into the panorama that appears after 2035. Likewise, this is something that the European Union itself has already admitted. Apostolos Tzitzikostasnext European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport, in his last speech. The future manager confirmed in broad strokes that all motorization that does not have carbon emissions will be well received in the European Union. That is, hydrogen fuel cell, synthetic fuels or battery electric.
According to what they say from Bloombergthe Italian government would be preparing a draft of a complaint that the executive will file with the division responsible for this law. Specifically, the request includes, among other things, that the review that the European Commission will carry out in 2026 be brought forward until next 2025. In this it is expected that the matter will be shelved. already specifically including the introduction of synthetic fuels.
“The industry is now at a critical moment, facing important challenges related to production, employment and global competition, which require urgent and coordinated action at the European Union level. The competitiveness of the European automobile industry must continue to be a central objective of policy in the region,” states the aforementioned draft of the document.
Those known as synthetic fuels would open the door to many other aspects, not only to continuing to sell combustion engines, but also to ‘saving’ many vehicles that run on gasoline and updating them to this new fuel. However, to know all the details, a priori, we will have to wait until next year 2026, when the European Union would give all the details in this regard.
