Rosa María Virolés, member of the judicial career since 1988 and one of the most prominent profiles of Social jurisprudence in Spain, emeritus magistrate of the Supreme Court, has received the Justice of Catalonia Award, from the president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa.
The Justice of Catalonia Award is a recognition of his full dedication to the study and practice of Labor and Social Security Law over 50 years. It is awarded to natural or legal persons who have distinguished themselves for their relevant contribution to the renewal, application and dissemination of Catalonia’s own law; to the carrying out or promotion of actions that have favored the modernization, effectiveness and efficiency in the provision of services related to justice in Catalonia; for the adaptation of the Administration of Justice to the social reality that surrounds it; for the special dedication to strengthening the rights of defense and representation of the most disadvantaged people in the field of free legal assistance, as well as for the well-known and relevant actions in the field of justice of the peace.
The president of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, stressed at the ceremony of awarding the highest distinction in the field of Justice, that “the Government’s commitment to the institution of justice and the will to provide all the means” to guarantee the proper functioning of Justice and has highlighted the importance of having strong institutions”.
Virolés has been a specialist in the social jurisdictional order since 1990, after passing specialization tests for the provision of places in this jurisdictional order and being appointed by Royal Decree 1072/1990, of July 19. Between that year and 2006 she was assigned to the Social Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia.
Before, between 1981 and 1986, she was a lawyer for the Social Security Administration in the Provincial Directorate of Tarragona and a lawyer for the State, assigned to the former Territorial Court of Barcelona. In 2006, she was appointed judge of the Supreme Court and assigned to the Fourth Chamber of this Court, where she also held a specialist position, and of which she was the president, from October 20, 2022 to July 18, 2023.
A milestone in the history of the Supreme Court
Her professional credit highlights, among many other merits, her participation as a magistrate in the first ruling that the Supreme Court issued only signed by female magistrates (STS. 419/2018). He taught university teaching for 32 uninterrupted years in his subject of specialization. She has been an associate professor at the University of Barcelona (Faculty of Law and Diploma in Labor Relations) and in the master’s degree in Labor Law and Social Security (Palau de les Heures).
He has also taught at the UNED (Associated Center of Tortosa), at the Faculty of Law and of Economics and Business Sciences; at the Tarragona Social School; at the University School of Social Work of Tarragona; at ESADE (Barcelona Law School, Labor Procedural Law), and at the Pompeu Fabra University (master’s degree in Labor Law and Social Security). Since January 2024, she has been a professor of social jurisdiction at the Judicial School.
In 2018, she was appointed vice president for Spain, founder and member of the Ethics Court of the Ibero-American Union of Judges (UIJ), in Brazil. Likewise, also in Brazil, in August 2022, at the invitation of the president of the Superior Court of Labor (TST), he received a tribute from the High Court.
A long history of distinctions
She has been distinguished with numerous decorations.
