Aerolíneas Argentinas faces a possible closure in case its employees do not accept the privatization process that the Government of Javier Milei has put on the table, whose economic plans involve transferring several public companies into private hands, such as the case of the state airline company.
This has been confirmed by the Secretary of Transportation of Argentina, Franco Mogetta, who has assured that progress can be made in privatization or its closure in case an agreement is not reached with the employees. «Either it is privatized or it is closed»he has sentenced.
This ultimatum has been given in the hours prior to a key meeting between Aerolíneas Argentinas and the unions to reach an agreement that will allow operations resume normallyafter several weeks of aviation strikes.
The Government’s demands go through a scenario of usual activity, no new strikes. If the unions reject it at the meeting scheduled this Friday at 3 p.m., a preventive crisis plan will be implemented that will trigger its closure.
The Government is clear that the plans for Aerolíneas Argentinas go through privatization since they started this process a few months ago, in the midst of high conflict among their employees, which led the Milei Executive to make this decision.
The government objective is that the company stop receiving the 8,000 million dollars from the State (7,433 million euros) that costs the public coffers annually. This process could conclude already at the beginning of next year 2025.
Intercargo Privatization
Likewise, the secretary has advanced the possibility of privatizing Intercargothe public company that provides ground assistance to airlines, from the moment of landing until the aircraft takes off.
In a country the size of Argentina, with a high need for air connectivity, Helpdesk cannot be allowed to be a monopolyaccording to Mogetta. “It is crazy that produces ridiculously high prices,” he said.
Thus, the Government announced last Thursday, within the framework of a union strike in the company, that progress will be made in deregulation in assistance servicesin order to reduce rates and offer services at an operational price. “We believe that it will generate benefit for users,” he predicted.
«It is one of the companies that has remained on the privatization list and, as soon as possible, according to the proposals we have, we are going to carry it out», Mogetta pointed out in relation to Intercargo.
The stoppage of the ramp service at certain airports caused some passengers to be stranded on the ground, which the Government defined as “union terrorism”.
«No union terrorist can take a passenger hostage again and ruin their vacations, their work trip or for medical reasons, nor refuse to do their job,” declared the Executive spokesperson, Manuel Adorni.
Along these lines, he has assured that our pulse will tremble to “bury the extortions of these criminals”. “It is the end of Intercargo as we knew it until now,” he expressed.
