With more than 3.5 million copies sold in Spanish alone, Juan Gómez-Jurado and the Red Queen They have consolidated their universe. To this we must add the 20 editions in different languages, until completing the eight installments of a mega saga that started in 2014 with The patient and concludes with everything dies (Editions B). More endorsement for this era? 200 editions and 180 weeks on the best-seller list. The final chapter of this editorial bombshell has also been presented simultaneously in Catalan (Rosa dels Vents) and in all Spanish-speaking countries.
“Zillions of movies”
A release that comes to us without a synopsis “at the express wish of the author,” the publisher explains. “You may wonder how I got here,” Gómez-Jurado asks. “A zillion movies,” he replies. A journey that finds inspiration in Shakespeare’s words “Life can only be understood looking back, but it has to be lived looking forward.” Without any prior clue about this “addictive thriller,” the author invites us to follow a path of surprises “that will blow up everything you thought you knew about the seven previous books,” he says. The writer has been working on this project for more than fifteen years, which was born from the conjunction of the two important characters in this saga: Antonia Scott and her natural enemy, Mr. White.
How to approach the saga
The reading order of the novels is not necessarily the same as their publication. The approach to the books of the Red Queen universe can begin, as thousands of readers have done, with four books: The Patient, Scar, Red Queen either Everything Burns. From there, the reader reaches naturally to the other novels.
Despite the freedom to approach her deliveries, we approach Antonia Scott, the central role of this universe. “Antonia is neither a police officer nor a criminalist. She has never held a gun or worn a badge, and yet she has solved dozens of crimes.” It is the letter of introduction of this unpredictable woman, who “does not leave her attic in Lavapiés” and who has an IQ of 242. In serial format
Red Queen (2018) landed this year on Prime Video in series format. Koldo Serra (who signed three installments of the successful The Money Heist) directed the first season with Victoria Luengo and Hovik Keuchkerian in the roles of Antonia Scott and Basque police officer Jon Gutiérrez in the thriller. Black Wolf (2019) and White King (2020) close the first trilogy of the Madrid journalist and writer, who puts together his story through a woman of gifted intelligence and an agent about to be expelled from the force. Two researchers united by the admiration and irritation they profess. The second batch, which is titled the aforementioned black wolfit’s in the oven. Given the complexity of its production and taking into account that we waited a year and a half to see the first one, it is most likely that we will have to wait until 2026 for the launch.
