The National Court has set between the months of November 2025 and April 2026 the trial to be held against the former Catalan president Jordi Pujol and his sons for allegedly forming a criminal organization that would have enriched itself for decades with corrupt activities using their political position.
In an ordering procedure, reported by Europa Press, the Criminal Chamber establishes a total of 55 different sessions spread over six months, establishing that all of them will begin at 10 in the morning.
Judge Santiago Pedraz agreed in June 2021 to bring the entire family to the dock, with the exception of the former president’s wife, Marta Ferrusola — whom he exonerated due to her state of health after the defense presented a medical report in who alleged that he suffered from severe dementia—as well as 11 other people, including Mercé Gironés, the ex-wife of the Pujols’ first-born son, Jordi Pujol Ferrusola, and several businessmen.
He charged them with alleged crimes of illicit association, money laundering, continued crime of falsification of commercial documents, crime of frustration in execution and up to seven crimes against the Public Treasury. To guarantee possible civil liabilities for the latter, he asked Jordi Pujol Ferrusola to deposit 7.5 million euros and his ex-wife another 400,000 euros.
In this way, the instructor followed in the footsteps of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, which targeted the entire ‘clan’, asking for 9 years in prison for the patriarch and up to 29 for his eldest son, while the State Attorney’s Office targeted only the first-born son. , his ex-wife and another brother, Josep Pujol Ferrusola, leading to 25, 17 and four years in prison for them, respectively.
In the order with which he ended the investigation, in 2020, the judge proposed trying the entire family for allegedly forming a criminal organization to, taking advantage of their “privileged position of ascendancy in political, social and economic life. Catalan for decades”, accumulating an “excessive wealth directly related to economic perceptions derived from corrupt activities.”
