The new Minister of Foreign Affairs of Argentina, Gerardo Wertheinassumed the position this Monday with the task of President Javier Milei to carry out a purge in the Foreign Ministry: to identify the “traitor” diplomats and the “enemies of the agendas of freedom.”
Milei decided replacement of Diana Mondino by Werthein, a millionaire businessman with only five months of diplomatic experience as ambassador in Washington, when Argentina voted at the United Nations in favor of lifting sanctions on Cubain line with the historical position of this country.
“They are traitors to the country, we are going to throw them out and make them pay,” Milei said this Monday about Mondino and his collaborators in an unclassifiable interview granted to his own partner, Amalia ‘Yuyito’ González, known for being the protagonist of Argentine entertainment and who presents a program on television.
Between words of love, touching hands, kisses, tears, songs and intimate confessionsMilei told ‘Yuyito’ about his plans for the Foreign Ministry: “not only did it cost Mondino his job (the vote on Cuba), but all those responsible are going to be sued and fired. “They live a parasitic life,” he said.
“I had defined that my alignment was with the United States and Israelwe had to be there. That is why the unforgivable mistake that Mondino made cost him his job in 30 minutes,” the president continued in his harangue against the former chancellor and the diplomatic corps.
Hours later, Werthein, a Jewish heir to a large family empire, was sworn in as chancellor on the Torah.
These events occur after weeks of tensions within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the press is barely attended to and those who speak, both officials and career diplomats, do so anonymously for fear of reprisals.
In search of “traitor” diplomats
The earthquake broke out on October 18, when the president of the radical right addressed a letter to the diplomatic corps in which he wrote, among other things, that Argentina is moving towards “a change of era” that “must be reflected on the international level.” .
In the letter he stressed, as he had already done before the UN General Assembly, that “the Agenda 2030 is nothing more than a supranational socialist government program that aims to solve the problems of modernity with solutions that threaten the sovereignty of nation-states.
He also warned them that the new “doctrine” implies that “no official of this administration nor those who represent Argentina abroad must accompany any project, declaration, resolution or document that establishes violations of the right to life, liberty and property“.
The letter concluded with the sentence: “Those who are not in a position to take on the challenges posed by the course adopted in defense of the ideas of freedom must step aside.”
Twelve days later, on November 30, coinciding with the announcement of Mondino’s dismissal, the Argentine Presidency issued a statement that diplomats and analysts described as “disturbing”, since it ended with the announcement that the Government was going to carry out an audit. of the career staff of the Chancellery.
The objective, according to the official statement, is to “identify the promoters of agendas that are enemies of freedom”, which has been interpreted by the media as the start of a purge within the ministry.
This Monday, shortly before Werthein’s inauguration as chancellor, Milei asked for the voluntary resignation of all the secretaries and undersecretaries of the ministry.
The TN channel reported that among the tasks entrusted by Milei to the new chancellor are, in addition to identifying wayward diplomats, closing embassies, reducing salaries, cutting staff and ending the benefits of airline mileage accumulation programs.
On a day that will mark a before and after In Argentine foreign policy, ‘Yuyito’ ended his viral interview with his partner-president by giving him a kiss and telling him “I love you”.
