The leadership of the Plurinational Parliamentary Group Sumar has chosen the former director general of Labor and deputy for Pontevedra, Verónica Martínez Barbero, as the new parliamentary spokesperson to replace Íñigo Errejón, after the latter’s resignation on October 25.
As explained by the formation, the decision has been made “unanimously among all the forces that make up the group, within the framework of a process that involves the restructuring of responsibilities within it, after the latest changes in its composition.” Along these lines, it has been agreed upon “the constitution with a work method and schedule of a coordination space in which all forces participate on equal terms.”
Sumar, who explains that Martínez will assume his duties as of November 14, points out that the election shows a “consensus” that “reinforces the work in the parliamentary group and the dialogue between political forces.” In a statement, the training also highlights that the new spokesperson “has a career linked to the defense of the rights of workers, both from the professional and political spheres.”
“Born in Gijón, but Galician by adoption, Martínez Barbero has been a Labor and Social Security inspector in the province of Pontevedra since 2006. Before taking her seat in that same province, she served as general director of Labor in the Ministry headed by Yolanda Díaz, and was one of the architects of such notable measures as the ERTEs during the pandemic and the labor reform,” Sumar highlights.
Now, in Congress, she is Sumar’s spokesperson in the Labor Commission and the president of the Social Rights Commission. Since the latter, he has promoted legislation as important as the recently approved ALS Law.
