When I don’t understand reality, I seek shelter in poetryas others look for it in the temples or in the gurus who say they illuminate the darkness.
Since I don’t understand many of the things I see, I seek refuge in a verse, because I don’t understand “pure logic / nor unconquerable laws.”
I look around and I don’t understand why those who have always made mistakes, confused and deceived want to provide solutions.
Since I do not understand the desire of many human beings to recover their scavenging instinct, I am looking for some words to cling to. I look around and I don’t understand why those who have always erred, confused and deceived want to provide solutions. I do not understand the ears that continue to listen to those who proclaim that this is a war of all against all.
Since I was never “a scientist, a poet, / and, for that reason, / I do not understand statistics / nor advanced quantum / nor biopolitics / and it is not (my) job / to establish the formulas / of the cosmos”, I seek verses that give me clues to locate the pieces of the world.
Faced with people who encourage us to run towards the abyss, while charging entry to this crazy competition, I think of the mud that covers everything. The real and the metaphorical. And I don’t understand anything.
Tomorrow they will cover today’s words with new screams and new insults. But this is not the time. We must illuminate the faces of the vermin, so that tomorrow, / when the centuries have passed, / it will be said: / Not all of them were Judas. / There were Robin Hoodes / and Don Quixotes,..”
I read Gata Cattana who left as quickly as so many great poets. She burned very quickly, but I hope “that of all (her) work / a part is saved.”, and that it can be all.
I read his verses converted into “long and boring / eternity” while I think about all the pain that surrounds us and challenges us. While I continue looking for a verse that protects me, because reading poetry in these moments “Unfortunately, / it is just another way of unraveling, / of bleeding out. / Maybe the best.”
(The phrases in quotes belong to verses of Gata Cattana of his newly released ‘complete poetry‘. The parentheses in them are verbal person changes made).
