The Government estimates that around 420,000 jobs could have been affected by the consequences of the DANA catastrophic event that devastated 78 municipalities in the country (75 of them in the province of Valencia). This was conveyed this Wednesday by the Secretary of State for Social securityBorja Suárez, in a press conference in which he reported on the measures adopted by his department to deal with the tragedy.
These slightly more than 400,000 potentially affected jobs represent approximately a third of all Social Security affiliates who registered in the province of Valencia on October 31, as reflected in the database of this organization. More specifically, we are talking about 350,000 employees and almost 70,000 self-employed people, number two of Elma Saiz in the ministry.
These are the people who They will be able to benefit from the protection plans launched by the department headed by Elma Saiz.. Namely, ERTE due to force majeure in the case of employed workers and benefit for cessation of activity (known as ‘self-employed unemployment’) for self-employed workers. In any case, we are looking at a potential figure, which reflects how many people were working in the affected municipalities. It is still early to know what the real impact is, which will become known as the days go by.
Suárez has not provided figures of how many companies have already requested to benefit from these ERTE, which allow temporary suspension of employment but preserving the job. Yes, the Ministry of Labor did so on Tuesday, which figures in 75 ERTE deployed to dateaffecting more than 300 workers.
The Government response plan rebates 100% the fees that companies have to pay to Social Security while the ERTE lasts. The affected employees may suffer reductions in working hours or total suspensions of employment, for which they will receive a benefit that will not apply to their unemployment rights in the future. They cannot be fired while the ERTE lasts, nor can they work overtime, nor can the company they work for hire other people to replace them.
Regarding the cessation of activity of the self-employed, Self-employed workers must go to the mutual insurance company to request them. Saiz’s number two in Social Security has confirmed that there are already applications, but has not given a specific figure. In any case, he recalled that the benefit is granted retroactively to October 29 and that the usual requirements of having contributed a minimum or for twelve months will not be in force.
