The hotel chain Barcelo has announced the opening of its second hotel in Germany, the Occidental Dresden Newa, located in the heart of Dresdencapital of the state of Saxony. This 4-star category accommodation joins the Barceló Hamburg, consolidating the group’s presence in the German hotel market. The opening is framed in the company expansion strategy in Central Europewhere it already manages a total of 11 hotels in countries such as Slovenia, Hungary, Italy, Poland and the Czech Republic.
The new establishment, the result of a lease contract signed with the investment fund IREMIS Hotel Real Estate Fund, will be operated under the Occidental brand and will undergo a complete renovation in 2025. The objective of the renovation is to position it as a benchmark among the city’s urban hotels and, in a later phase, the hotel could be integrated under the Barceló Hotels & Resorts brand.
The Occidental Dresden Newa is located in the historic center of dresdena few steps from the central train station and next to the pedestrian shopping street Prager Strasse. The hotel has 319 rooms and offers an ideal location for both tourists and business travelers visiting this city known as the “Florence of the Elbe” for its cultural and artistic wealth.
Dresden, located in eastern Germany, is recognized for its historical heritageincluding more than 60 museums, 35 theaters, and a host of baroque-style buildings such as the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger Palace, and the Semper Opera. The city is also known for its resistance and recovery after the damage suffered in World War II, becoming a symbol of rebirth.
The inauguration of the hotel in Dresden is part of Barceló’s growth plan in Europe, where the company invested around 400 million euros in acquisitions, renovations and asset repositioning in 2024. Since the opening of its first hotel in Prague in 1993, the hotel group has increased its presence on the continent, highlighting the company’s interest in urban assets in cities with great tourist attraction.
José Ramón Álvarez-Cervela Rodríguez, European Area Director at Barceló Hotel Group, highlighted the strategic importance of the European region in the company’s expansion plans. According to the manager, Barceló Hotel Group seeks to take advantage of investment opportunities, both its own and in collaboration with third parties to continue consolidating its presence in Central Europe. With the opening of the Occidental Dresden Newa, the group now has 12 hotels in this area, continuing its growth and repositioning strategy in key destinations in the European market.
