The Forbes List of the hundred richest Spaniards is a ranking in which businessmen predominate, naturally, those who own a significant fraction of the shares of large companies, which in some cases even remain in the same family. Ortega (Inditex), Del Pino (Ferrovial), Entrecanales (Acciona), Roig (Mercadona)…, there are names that are repeated. On the contrary, it is less common to encounter professionals in the arts or sports.
This year, once again, Amancio Ortega, who has a fortune that amounts to 120,000 million euros, leads the classification. And the second, again also, is his daughter Sandra Ortega, who accumulates 10.4 billion thanks to the control of 5% of the group’s shares.
They are followed by Rafael del Pino and Calvo-Sotelo, with 7.1 billion euros (they have 20% of Ferrovial’s shares); Juan Roig, with 5.8 billion (he owns 80% of Mercadona, a company that is not listed on the stock market) and Isak Andik, with 4.5 billion (he controls 95% of Mango, a company that is also not listed on the stock market).
As already explained, there are few artists and athletes. In fact, there is only one singer, and It’s not Rosalíawho despite his meteoric career has a net worth of around 50 million euros. It will surprise no one that the only one on the table is Julio Iglesiaswhich in its 60-year career has sold more than 350 million records. Forbes estimates that he has a fortune of 750 million euros, which places him in 58th position in the table.
Its income comes mainly from copyrights, to which must be added many and varied investments. Among other things, he has a 450-hectare mansion in Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), a piece of Indian Creek Island, which he shares with Ricky Martin, Beyoncé and Ivanka Trump, and a private island in the Bahamas.
Gil Marín, Florentino and the athletes who are left out
When it comes to sports, there are many businessmen, the wealthiest being Juan Carlos Escotet, shareholder of Deportivo de La Coruña and president of Abanca (4,000 million euros); Florentino Pérez, president of Real Madrid and ACS (2.7 billion) and Fernando Roig, who presides over Villarreal and owns 9% of Mercadona, a company chaired by his brother Juan (1.6 billion).
Further down the table, in box 97, appears Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, the CEO of Atlético de Madrid and first-born son of the former mayor of Marbella, Jesús Gil. It has 350 million euros, just less than what it had last year (353 million), when it fell fifty places in the table compared to 2022.
However, and despite the cliché that surrounds this sport, there is not a single footballer who has enough money to be among the hundred richest. It is not so strange if you take into account that this year the combined assets of the main fortunes have increased by 27.7% compared to 2023, reaching 250.4 billion euros, which has raised the cut-off mark to be within the classification up to 350 million.
Andrés Iniesta and Sergio Ramos are far behind, who are the Spanish footballers with the greatest wealth, about 100 million each. Outside of the king of sports, Marc Márquez, a Moto GP rider, stands out, consolidating his assets with assets valued at 80 million. The only one who has come close to being on the list has been the tennis player Rafa Nadal, who is the athlete who accumulates the most fortune with 310 million euros.
