Boeing workers in the United States agreed this morning to end their historic strike of almost two months, once almost 60% of the workforce has voted in favor of the new collective agreement agreed between the company and the union, which contains significant increases salaries.
The agreement predicts a 38% increase in salaries over the next four yearsas well as a bonus for each worker of $12,000 for subscribing to the text. The average salary of Boeing employees four years from now will be $119,300, a substantial increase from the current $75,600.
The union representing about 33,000 Boeing workers, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, announced the results at the company’s main plant in Seattle. The union had announced its support for the proposal approved this Monday: “In every negotiation and strike there is a point at which we have extracted everything we can and kept our jobs. We are at that point now and we risk a regressive or lower offer in the future”.
Two weeks ago, the workers had defeated the previous proposal with 64% of the votes, which included a 35% increase over four years and a $7,000 bonus.
The strike started on September 13 after union members rejected the initial proposal for a 25% increase.
The new agreement also includes maternity and paternity leave, as well as an annual bonus for workers, but the union has failed to negotiate the restoration of the pension plan that Boeing dismantled in 2014.
Two weeks ago, Boeing disclosed quarterly losses of more than $6 billion, the result of the production crisis of the 737 Max model, aggravated since September by the strike.
