“Bringing together young people from around the world to develop their creativity, design and problem-solving skills through challenging and educational competitions,” was the initial mission of the World Robot Association, the official coordinator of the World Robotics Olympiad (WRO). by its acronym in English). A competition in which children and adolescents between 8 and 19 years old, from 93 different countries, present solutions to problems based on the STEAM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) methodology. Through “educational robotics”, the younger generations must solve different challenges with logical thinking and creativity.
The competition is developed with kits of robotics from LEGO Education, which this year has the support of FUNDESTEAM Mexico, whose mission is to contribute improvements to the educational quality of the country, training children with logical skills and equipping them with mathematical skills. The WRO consists of three stages: Regional Olympiads, National Olympiad and the International Final; This edition will take place from November 28 to 30 in the city of Izmir, on the Aegean coast of Türkiye.
Since 2012, the Mexican center RoboTecnica, focused on the knowledge and practice of robotics and mechatronics, has encouraged young people to achieve multiple awards. It currently has 33 regional trophies, 28 national and 5 global trophies; among them Qatar 2015, Germany 2022, Panama 2023. This 2024, three of its teams qualified for the last round and are ready to win the sixth international trophy.
What teams will compete?
The WRO is divided into four categories: Robo Mission, Robo Sports, Future Engineers and Future Innovators:
- Robo Mission: is divided into three age groups (8-11/11-15/14-19). The request is to build a robot that solves tasks in a field.
- Robo Sports: The age group is 11 to 19 years old. Teams compete with two robots in a given game.
- Future Innovations: is divided into three age groups (8-11/11-15/14-19). You are asked to work on a project, design and build a robot.
- Future Engineers: The age group is 14 to 19 years old. We work with advanced engineering following current research lines and trends.
This year’s theme is “Allies of the Earth”, the purpose is for teams to learn more about how humans affect nature and how natural phenomena can impact our lives. In the Robo Mission 2024 category, teams will program an autonomous robot that emulates the scale reconstruction of a city devastated by a natural disaster.
