The Chipiona City Council (Cádiz) has reported in a note that on November 1 at 10:00 a.m. an emergency drill will be carried out on the beaches of Regla and Cruz del Mar in which the sirens on the coast will be activated. coinciding with the commemoration of the Lisbon tsunami of 1755.
During the drill The long-range sirens located in these coastal areas will be activated, in such a way that, being an exclusively sound simulation, No response is required from the public. However, the Civil Protection authorities and the City Council will be supervising its correct development.
The objective of this exercise is also rRemember the importance of preparation and prevention against possible coastal risks. In addition, it will allow the alarm system to be tested and ensure its effectiveness in the event of a real emergency, according to the City Council, which has insisted that it is not necessary for the population to carry out any protection or evacuation action.
This exercise seeks, in addition to testing the alert system, to raise awareness about the history of the region and its vulnerability to natural events of this magnitude, thus strengthening the culture of prevention.
This Cadiz municipality has participated since 2020 in the tsunami risk preparation program, being recognized this summer aso ‘Tsunami Ready’ by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCOhaving surpassed the criteria established by UNESCO to obtain said recognition.
The ‘Tsunami Ready’ program is a comprehensive tool ranging from tsunami hazard assessment and evacuation mappingto carrying out periodic exercises, connecting people with alert systems andeducating society about the threats that come from the oceansalso promoting inclusion and a participatory approach and active collaboration between different stakeholders, contributing to the achievement of the goal of safer oceans.
