The reggaeton singer of Puerto Rican origin Nicky Jam withdrew this Wednesday his support for the republican candidateformer President Donald Trump (2017-2021), and stressed that “Puerto Rico respects itself,” after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe said that it is a “floating island of garbage” at a Republican Party rally.
«I thought that (Trump) was the best for the economy of the United States where many Latinos live, we live, myself included. There are many immigrants who are suffering because of the economy and, being a businessman, I thought it was the best move,” the artist expressed on his Instagram account. «Never in my life did I think that a month later a comedian was going to come to criticize my country and speak badly of my country, and therefore, I renounce any support for Donald Trump. Puerto Rico is respected», stressed Jam.
In mid-September, the reggaeton singer showed his support for Trump at a rally in Nevada and said: “We need you back as president. Four years have passed and nothing has happened. “We need Trump.” «Where is Nicky? Thanks Nicky. Excellent to have you here», then responded the Republican candidate for the elections to be held on November 5.
Puerto Rican singers Anuel AA and Justin Quiles also showed their support for Trump at a rally, but important artists from the island have given their support to the Democratic candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris. The leaders of all the political parties of Puerto Rico, as well as renowned artists such as Ricky Martin and Residente, have expressed since last Sunday their rejection of the comedian’s statements.
Hinchcliffe was scheduled to travel to Puerto Rico this week and appear in Gala, one of the main tourist centers in San Juan, and in the exclusive area of Palmas del Mar in Humacao (east), but the administrations of both places canceled his act. The inhabitants of Puerto Rico, a Commonwealth of the United States, cannot vote between Trump and Harris in the elections, but the more than 5 million Puerto Ricans who live in the United States do participate in these elections.
