The Madrid court has launched the investigation against Íñigo Errejón due to the complaint made by the actress Elisa Mouliaá. Legal sources explain to this newspaper that the magistrate, after receiving confirmation from Congress that he is no longer a deputy, has declared himself competent and the first thing he will do, in the coming days, will be to summon Mouliaá herself to declare and ratify the complaint he made a few days ago to the Police. At the moment Errejón has not been charged or called to testify.
Last Thursday, court number 47 of Madrid received the complaint that the actress Elisa Mouliaá presented to the Police hours before. The magistrate’s first move was to ask Congress if Errejón had effectively left his deputy record, receiving an affirmative response from the lower house early in the afternoon. Legal sources already explained then that it was necessary to complete this procedure to be able to declare himself competent, since the deputy’s record implies that the former Sumar spokesperson would be certified before the Supreme Court.
In his complaint, Mouliaá explained that he met and spoke with Errejón throughout 2021 and that in September of that year they met at a party. She claims that the politician grabbed her “strongly” by the arm to take her “by force” to a room whose door he locked “so that she could not escape.” Errejón, according to the complaint, began to “kiss and touch” the woman until “he pushed her onto the bed and took out his virile member.” Everything happened, she added, without her consent and while she was “paralyzed.”
Several testimonies from women who accused Errejón of sexist attitudes led to a statement in which the former deputy announced his resignation, although without expressly alluding to the accusations against him. From Sumar, a party whose parliamentary spokesperson she held until a few days ago, to Más Madrid, political representatives such as Yolanda Díaz or Mónica García have defended that they were never aware of these sexist attitudes although, for the moment, the scandal has resulted in the departure of Madrid deputy Loreto Arenillas under accusations, which she denies, of having covered up events that occurred at a concert in Castellón.
The judge’s roadmap is to call Mouliaá to testify to confirm her accusations against Errejón, at which time she will also be able to provide the WhatsApp messages in which, according to her, she already then recounted the situation she experienced to several close people. A very common piece of evidence in crimes of sexual violence in which there are rarely witnesses beyond the victim herself, medical reports and reports of injuries and the statements made by the complainant herself at the time of the events.
Multiple accusations
The first testimony with accusations of sexist attitudes against Íñigo Errejón, spokesperson for Sumar and deputy until a few days ago, was published by journalist Cristina Fallarás on her Instagram account. In subsequent days, more women shared their experiences with the politician, as elDiario.es published: “Everything was about his desire to dominate,” a woman who had a relationship with him for more than a year told this newspaper. The communicator Aída Nízar has also announced the filing of a complaint with the Police against Errejón for events that occurred in 2015.
The political crisis in Sumar y Más Madrid due to the Errejón scandal has also resulted in the dismissal of Loreto Arenillas, a member of the Madrid Assembly and close to the politician, under accusations of having acted “behind” the party when, in the In the summer of 2023, a woman reported online that Errejón had touched her ass at a party in Castellón. Arenillas, who spoke with the young woman and introduced herself as a “mediator,” has denied having covered up any crime and has criticized her party’s accusation against her.
Political leaders close to the former parliamentarian have denied having knowledge of the sexist attitudes that several women are now denouncing and are investigating, for now, a court in Plaza de Castilla. “If I had known that Errejón was an alleged sexual offender, I would not have been a deputy or spokesperson,” said Yolanda Díaz. Minister Mónica García stated that if they had known that “he was an aggressor,” their measure would not have been to recommend “professional help” but rather “to go directly to a police station.”
