The Shura Council of Hezbollahthe highest governing body of the Lebanese Shia groupannounced this Tuesday the appointment of Naim Qassem as its new general secretary. The one who was the number two of the organization will thus replace Hasan Nasrallahdied in a bombing of Israel on September 27th.
In a statement, the Hezbollah leadership assured that “in accordance with the mechanism approved for the election of the secretary general, Hezbollah Shura Council agreed to elect His Eminence Sheikh Naim Qassem as secretary general, carrying the blessed banner on this journey, asking Almighty God to guide him in this noble mission at the head of the group and its Islamic resistance.”
In the note, the armed training promised that, with Qassem’s appointment, “they will work together to achieve Hezbollah’s principles and the goals of its path,” as well as to “keep the flame of resistance lit and his banner held high until victory is achieved.”
One month after Nasrallah assassinationthe group has decided to choose the one who was the number two of training for their new leadership. Qassem has been in charge of giving the three television speeches offered after the death of the previous Hezbollah chief, who spent three decades in office.
This move comes after Hezbollah last week confirmed the death of Hashem Safi al Dinhead of the formation’s Executive Council, considered one of the main candidates to succeed Nasrallah.
Qassemwhose location is unknown, was appointed deputy head of Hezbollah in 1991, when Nasrallah was not yet leading the formation. The current leader has been considered one of the main spokesmen of the Shiite group and the highest-level figure, even granting interviews to foreign media.
