Madrid will have a pioneering space to honor those babies who died in the womb or newborns. Inmaculada Sanz, the vice mayor of the city, has taken advantage of a Vox proposal that proposed a similar initiative to announce that the Almudena Cemetery will open this Thursday, the eve of All Saints’ Day, a facility named the Butterfly Park, that will allow the families of unborn babies to honor them and bury them.
The vice mayor has detailed that this new enclave, created in a preferred location that has been rehabilitated in the last two years, will have several wall and bush columbariumsa garden area with white roses for the scattering of ashes, a fountain, a small monolith and a space for memory, all in white. «This space seeks to alleviate the suffering of the perinatal death. I want to thank the Madrid Funeral Services for their diligence in this regard, because it is an initiative that ennobles the city,” he detailed.
The vice mayor explained that this new enclave emerged in 2021, as a result of the proposal presented by the non-profit association El hollow of your belly in the first edition of the End of Life and Grief Support contest, convened by the municipal company in 2021. Since then, the municipal team has been working on this project, which began to materialize with the start of the corresponding works last August.
Free joint burial
This initiative, in addition to offering an alternative for families who wish to use the different types of burial units individually, will also offer, free of charge, an option for the burial of those babies that Madrid hospitals ask us to be cremated together, thereby granting them a dignified and specially identified physical space that contributes to mitigating, at least in part, the pain of mothers and fathers than due to the difficult circumstances in which these types of deaths usually occur.
The city council will try, Sanz expressed in a second intervention, that they are trying take this initiative to “all local cemeteries that they can”, although it will not be possible in all of them due to lack of space.
