The evolution that many plug-in hybrid cars have undergone is astonishing. Until not long ago, the general average was around 40 or 50 kilometers of maximum electric range. This has evolved to the present day where to find A mechanic of this type with more than 100 kilometers of range is not crazy. So much so that there are some Chinese firms that already have models with more than 300 kilometers range. However, this milestone is taken a step further on the new component presented by CATL.
From the most prestigious Chinese battery company in the world, they have just presented their new system which they have named Freevoy Super Hybrid Battery. This is specially designed for cars with plug-in hybrid technology. However, what has drawn the most attention is their autonomy statement in which they confirm that they will be able to provide their vehicle with a greater range than many of the current ‘pure’ electric vehicles.
CATL bridges the gap between PHEVs and EVs
According to the company, CATL has created a battery that, in addition to its own autonomy, is capable of being especially efficient regarding its performance in climates with extremely cold temperaturesunlike current packages.
CATL’s latest creation, specifically, is capable of declaring a maximum range of around 400 kilometers. To do this, they have used a chemical compound of sodium and lithium, which balances the energy density, so its autonomy is above average. However, the company has not yet given explicit details about its size, energy density or its own capacity.
With all this, as has been pointed out by the firm, Its official launch will take place from next year 2025 and the first vehicles in which it will be mounted will be signed by Li Auto, Avatr or Changan Deepal (the latter has already confirmed his arrival in Europe). Later, other manufacturers yet to be revealed will join.
But how have they calculated this high autonomy?
The company assures that this electric autonomy has been calculated from the light vehicle test cycle in China, resulting in a figure that multiplies by three the most prominent plug-in hybrid cars on the market. As a mere reference, this battery alone surpasses the approval of many ‘pure’ electric vehicles, such as the MINI Cooper E, the FIAT 500e or even equals others such as the new Lancia Ypsilon.
Furthermore, with advances in CALT’s fast charging systems, it is expected that it can offer fast recharging, thus being able recover up to 280 kilometers of autonomy after just 10 minutes of plugging in. Its development comes from CATL’s “response” to a market that increasingly asks for hybrid cars. With this, “the experience will be practically identical to that of having an electric car,” they stated.
“Many hybrid vehicle drivers want to use more electricity and less fuel, but current PHEV models often prioritize the combustion engine. Our new battery addresses this problem extending electric range and providing faster chargingwhile working well in extreme temperatures,” said the CATL spokesperson who announced this new product.
