The Japanese market has not yet fully recovered from the effects of the pandemic, but Turespaña, in its Winter 2024 Trend Reports, highlights that the restart of the Iberia direct route between Madrid and Tokyo this Sunday will cause a boost to demand for these tourists.
In August 2024, the volume of Japanese tourists who visited Spain was over 62% of 2019. Now, the return of the only direct connection between both countries is increasing demand for the winter.
The organization highlights that Spain is a country with a high attraction for Japanese touristssince they seek “premium tourism” and have a greater spending intention.
Regarding the return of this route, the general director of Turespaña, Miguel Sanz, highlighted that Japan “has been and continues to be a strategic market” for Spain and has highlighted the importance of these tourists, who They have a “high level of spending” and great interest in Spanish art and culture.
Regarding promotion in the Japanese market, Turespaña develops actions to support the marketing of Spanish tourist destinations, products and services, through campaigns in the media and social networks. However, Sanz points out that this new connection is “unbeatable news for both countries.”
Recovery after the pandemic
Iberia launches its flights between Madrid and Tokyo this Sunday, October 27the only direct connection that unites both countries and the longest route in the entire company network.
The company already operated this route between 2016 and 2020, although it had to suspend the service that year due to the pandemic. Now, the connection is reactivated with a flight that will depart on Sunday at 11:55 a.m. from T4 of the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport and, after 14 hours of flightwill land at 10:45 local time in Tokyo on Monday, October 28.
Flights between both destinations will have three weekly frequencieson Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays departing from Madrid and on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays departing from Tokyo.
The route will be operated with a Airbus A350 airplane with capacity for 348 customers in ‘business’, premium tourist and tourist classes, so during the first year some 90,000 seats will be offered to travel from one country to another.
