Accessing the labor market once you have completed your studies is not always easy. Therefore, one way to start making a name for yourself is to work as an intern. An opportunity that the sports journalist has spoken about Manolo Lamawho has stated that he does not understand that the first questions of young people who begin to work as interns are “How much are they going to earn, what schedule are they going to have and what days are they going to be free?”.
“I spank the interns a lot, and I hit them a lot, because It seems inexplicable to me that they give you a chance and you don’t kill for it.“, said the radio host during his visit to the podcast What you sayby Álex Fidalgo. “I arrived at 10 in the morning and left at 2 at night. He didn’t even ask what day he was off. I spent a whole year without earning a penny. I worked for free. At that time, that happened. And I didn’t ask,” he added.
It was then that Lama narrated his experience and how he ended up becoming part of the staff of the Cadena SER sports section: “After a year, they started paying me for collaborations. Cadena SER from Elche called me, you can give me a chronicle of Elche that plays with Castilla, and they paid me 100 pesetas, Gijón called me… because I went to training. “I went to everything I could.”
“And there I started to earn a little money, and There came a time when I earned more with those collaborations. And then they gave me a salary. I don’t remember how much it was. I think it was 40,000 pesetas. But the interns now… it would kill them,” he pointed out, at the same time revealing that now “The first thing they ask you is how much they are going to earn, what hours they are going to have and what days they are going to be free”.
Some questions that the journalist does not understand because he considers that “You have the opportunity of a lifetime”. In this sense, Lama is clear about what to do: “Bite, grab the morsel like a lion and do not let it go under any circumstances, which then cannot be, well it cannot be, but do not make it easy for them to let you go” .
Furthermore, Manolo Lama has revealed an anecdote with one of his interns on Cadena SER, to whom he entrusted the task of attending a meeting of the Higher Sports Council. When the clock struck 9:00 p.m. without the session having concluded, the young man called the announcer to tell him that it was not over yet.
“And I told him, well you know, there until it’s over. And he told me, I’m meeting my girlfriend. And I told him, So choose a boy, your girlfriend or the job. Well, he went with his girlfriend. He wouldn’t like this very much,” he noted. “I killed. I never asked what day he was off. I was happy on the radio. I didn’t have any vacations or anything. He was the happiest guy on the radio“, he concluded.
His statements have caused a stir on social networks, where many users have rejected his opinion. “Being an intern is not being a slave”“people need to know if the job you offer them is compatible with their life project” or “overtime for interns is illegal” have been some of the comments.
