Repsol has just signed an alliance to advance the measures that the company is taking to reinforce its commitment to the circular economy. The multi-energy company has just closed an agreement with Mr. Mendrugo, a company dedicated to fighting food waste and promoting local development.
From now on, Repsol service stations will collect the stale bread left over from them, so that Mr. Mendrugo can use it as raw material for brewing beer.
A million people pass through their more than 3,400 points of sale every day, which allows them to market billions of liters of fuel and countless goods and services that have made them leaders in sales in some segments as unexpected as that of sunglasses or bread.
Repsol service stations sell more than 20,000 loaves of bread daily, making the oil company one of the largest players in the sector with nearly 14 million units of bread and pastries sold each year.
This project thus joins a series of circular economy initiatives that the company continues, such as the collection of used cooking oil for the production of renewable fuels.
Used cooking oils are valuable as secondary materials for the manufacture of biodiesel. Thus, this measure contributes both to the reduction of emissions derived from its inadequate management and to the objectives of renewables and advanced biofuels and the reduction of the risk of contamination of waters and aquifers.
Repsol currently has 450 service stations in the Community of Madrid, Galicia and Castilla-La Mancha where used cooking oil is collected. For every liter of used oil delivered, the oil company will get 30 cents in Waylet balance, the company’s leading payment application with 8 million users. The company also recycles mattresses to be able to take advantage of the polyurethane foam they contain inside.
