The president of Junts, Laura Borrashas asked the Supreme Court for amnesty from the four and a half year prison sentence imposed on him for awarding contracts by hand when he presided over the Institució de les Lletres Catalanes (Institució de les Lletres Catalanes) (ILC) and has alleged that he worked for “disseminate the independence project“.
In a writing, advanced by the newspaper ARA, Gonzalo BoyeBorràs’ lawyer, argues that the sentence imposed on the president of Junts for fragmenting contracts from the ILC website project to arbitrarily award them to a friend are included in the article of the amnesty law which alludes to acts aimed at “disseminating the independence project.”
According to Boye, that was “basically” what the activity carried out by Laura Borràs consisted of, since “for the independence project, language is one of the pillars on which it is supported.”
The lawyer elaborates that the leader of Junts served as director of the ILC “within the framework of a government with a clearly progressive vocation”, after which she was elected parliamentarian in 2017 and, in May 2018, appointed Minister of Culture.
“All these milestones in his political activity are those that, in parallel, are taking place in a criminal process that intensified as my client assumed visibility and political significance, with an intensely pro-independence profile, within a political party whose leader He was then, and is now, in exile,” adds the lawyer.
Borràs was sentenced in March of last year to four and a half years in prison by the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) for the crimes of prevarication and falsification of documents, in a sentence that proposed his partial pardon so that he could avoid going to prison.
In fact, Borràs’ lawyer also argues in his brief before the Supreme Court – which is pending review of the sentence – that there is no evidence of any “personal enrichment or loss to the public coffers” on the part of the Junts leader, so believes that she is “deserving of a pardon.”
Boye lists in his writing the benefits that he believes are derived from the application of the amnesty lawamong which it stands out that it will allow “to decongest the courts and reduce the procedural burden related to the events of the sovereignty process.”
