The Spanish Marc Márquez established a new absolute record for the Buriram circuit being the fastest in official practice at the MotoGP Thai Grand Prix.
Marquez He ran in 1:29.165, breaking the previous record in the category.established in 2023 by his compatriot Jorge Martín in 1:29.287 and which was also second below his record from last year, by running in 1:29.275.
The Spanish Pedro ‘Tiburón’ Acosta, who had to undergo a medical examination to be definitively ‘fit’ for the Thai weekend, it happened without any problemwhich entitled him to continue competing the rest of the weekend.
Jorge Martín was in charge of scoring the first official practice reference with 1:31.045but it only lasted a few minutes, until first the Frenchman Johann Zarco and then the Spanish ‘Tiburón’ Acosta, first and Marc Márquez, later, surpassed him.
But the session had only just begun and everything indicated that now the circuit record was going to end up falling, since the pace of the session started very, very fast and In less than eight minutes it was already running at 1:30.230one second behind the fastest lap in the category, which Jorge Martín has held since last year at 1:29.287.
Acosta stopped the clock at 1:30.209, but as soon as Marc Márquez crossed the finish line, that registered ‘expired’ when putting 1:30.105 on the table.
The Italian Enea Bastianini suffered a mistake while looking for a rival in turn three and ended up on the floor when he was in sixth place and many pilots chose to make their first stop at their workshops.
Marc Márquez was one of the first to make the second exit to the track to finding the track very clean of rivalsalthough he did not achieve his goal of lowering the best time, while behind him pilots such as ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia, Acosta, Martín and the Frenchman Fabio Quartararo were approaching their record.
Although he tried, the Spanish Aleix Espargaró, who suffered a bad fall in the morning, was tested in official practice under the watchful eye of the competition’s medical director, the Spanish Ángel Charte, and after doing a few laps he got off the motorcycle to leave the workshop and conclude, at least, the first day of Thailand.
With Marc Márquez as a reference, behind, both Acosta, Quartarararo and Bagnaia got ‘closer’ to thousandths of a second of the time of the eight-time world champion, with up to sixteen drivers in less than half a second of distance, who at that time was in his workshop while on the track the South African Brad Binder was running in partials below his best time.
But Binder failed in the third set, which he was a tenth and a half slower than Marc Márquezalthough he recovered it in the fourth to stop the clock at 1:30.023, which by 82 thousandths of a second gave him the best provisional time in the category.
Later, Brad Binder ‘killed’ it at that same point to get a fast lap of 1:29.949the first driver to ride in that second, although with many drivers making an important change of pace that began to generate numerous changes in the time table.
Pedro Acosta was the next to take the initiative, by running at 1:29.840, although it did not last longbecause behind him it was Fabio Quartararo who improved his personal record to run in 1:29.822, while his teammate, the Spanish Alex Rins, did not have a good rhythm and was just at the opposite pole of the Frenchman .
The most serious ‘time attack’ of official practice had begun and Jorge Martín made it clear by lapping in 1:29.543with ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia second by a tenth of a second, although it was not worth the effort for either of them, as Maverick Viñales took the first position from them by running in 1:29.506.
One lap later Jorge Martín established a new circuit record with 1:29.275just twelve thousandths of a second faster than the record he set in 2023, when he stopped the clock at 1:29.287.
There were still seven minutes left in the session and practically all the drivers went into their workshops to do the last tire change to seek an improvement in his classification and with the first twelve classified within half a second of distance.
‘Pecco’ Bagnaia took it ‘very seriously’ and On his flying lap he began setting a partial fast lap in the firstfailed in the second, but recovered his sensations in the third and gave up again in the fourth, which placed him in second place, 85 thousandths behind Martín.
But after them he appeared Marc Márquez, who surpassed them both by running in 1:29.165 to become the leaderwith thousandths of a second ahead of Jorge Martín and ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia, who could not beat the record of the eight-time world champion.
Bagnaia was overtaken with the checkered flag waving on the finish line by his teammate Enea Bastianini, which relegated him to fourth place, followed by Maverick Viñales, Franco Morbidelli, Pedro Acosta, who managed to get into the second direct classification on his last lapahead of Alex Márquez, Marco Bezzecchi and Johann Zarco, who took over the ten positions with the right to enter the second direct classification.
