This Thursday, the European University inaugurated the first School of Sustainability in a Spanish university, reaffirming its commitment to training in sustainable development. The opening ceremony began with the signing of the educational institution’s adhesion to the UN Global Compact and was attended by prominent companies and institutions committed to sustainability, such as LG, Chep, Heineken, Sacyr and Konecta Foundation.
The event, which was held on the Villaviciosa de Odón campus of the European University of Madrid, included the participation of Martha Tomascorporate director of the UN Global Compact, who has assured that “The European University has been a pioneer in creating the first School of Sustainability, something that is key to moving forward and laying the foundations for solid and reinforced sustainability. You, as a University, are a lever, speaker and catalyst within the ecosystem in which you operate as trainers of future business leaders.“.
For its part, Otilia de la Fuentepresident and CEO of the European University, has stated that “talking about sustainability is no longer a fad, it is a crucial need to ensure the well-being of future generations and the preservation of the planet.” In addition, she stressed that “At the European University we firmly believe that education is decisive in addressing all these challenges. Sustainability is a fundamental pillar of our mission and is integrated into our management and academic model. In our classrooms we form global citizens, aware and committed to their environment, capable of leading the change towards a more sustainable future.“.
Graciela de la Morenadirector of the Konecta Foundation, has highlighted the need to train students with new professional profiles who are capable of addressing the complex sustainability challenges that companies demand: “It is an important milestone that a university like the European one, of your prestige, has sustainability integrated in such a structural and transversal way. It seems essential to me that you listen to what the market demands and that you are already training and educating the future leaders of the companies that are now in your classrooms.“.
Before giving way to the debate tables, in which established companies in the field of Sustainability such as LG, Chep, Heineken or Sacyr and companies that have been born around it, such as Ocean Born, Mar de Fondo Project, Yorgut or WeHero, have participated. , from alumni of the European University, the director of the School of Sustainability, Julia Ayuso, has highlighted the vision of this new school: “We want to be a point of reference in the training of professionals who will lead the transition towards a green economy. We are at a crucial moment, where we can no longer see sustainability as a distant goal, but rather as an urgent reality that demands new solutions and approaches”.
The person in charge of closing the event was the rector of the European University of Madrid, Dr. Elena Gazapowho has assured that “The School of Sustainability was born at a crucial moment and is a fundamental pillar for the Institution. The European University adds sustainability to all its programs as a transversal element that permeates each subject and extracurricular activity“.
