46% of Spaniards (22.3 million people) have contracted death insurance, a product that manages and provides funeral services upon the death of the insured. There are more of those who have health insurance (26%) or life insurance (31% according to the comparator Aseguravida).
The data, which come from a study carried out by UNESPA, the association of insurance companies, show that this insurance is widely accepted, being one of the most widespread protections, along with automobile and life insurance. It is an economical product – ABC has compared the offers, which are between 15 euros per month for the cheapest and 150 for the most expensive.-, and it must be taken into account that, according to the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU), the cost of a funeral in Spain is on average 3,700 euros, with prices that vary substantially depending on the location in which it is carried out. carry out the funeral and any extras that the family members want to include.
In turn, the employers’ experts explain that the percentage of people covered by this service has remained practically stable in recent years. Traditionally, the level of insurance increases with age, reaching a maximum level of around 61% from the age of 70. 78% of Cadiz residents are covered
One of the most outstanding characteristics of this service is the high presence it has throughout the national territory. The province with the highest volume of insured people in relative terms is Cádiz, where 78% of residents are covered.
They are followed by Ávila (76%), Badajoz (73%), Ciudad Real (70%) and Jaén (65%). Death insurance is less widespread, however, in Soria (19%), Teruel (20%), Huesca (21%), the Balearic Islands (21%) and Navarra (23%). But even in these territories it continues to serve a fifth of the local population, UNESPA highlights in its study.
A relevant piece of information included in the report is that the municipality in which the insured reside «does not seem to be an important element when defining the greater or lesser presence of this type of insurance. Death policies have outstanding acceptance in both towns and cities,” it reads.
