“It’s the same as always, we’ve been talking about Ayuso for three days now.” This is how an authorized source from the Popular Party explains what happened in Genoa after the president of the Community of Madrid announced her decision not to attend the meeting with Pedro Sánchez in La Moncloa scheduled for this Friday. Ayuso has not only disavowed Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who said that it would be “a mistake” not to go, but has pointed out to the rest of the PP barons, who have met with Sánchez.
And, although everyone in the conservative formation has long resigned themselves to assuming the uniqueness of Ayuso Within the party, nervousness has settled in the leadership of a Feijóo who is weathering the storm.
The national president of the PP remained silent for 24 hours and only on Tuesday, forced by a cloud of journalists who were waiting for him at the exit of an event in the capital, did he briefly verbalize his position: “How can I not support Ayuso?” Feijóo said that everything was “sufficiently explained” and closed it, saying goodbye to the media: “I understand that when there is no news we have to invent it.”
This Wednesday he did not attend the control session in Congress
—although Sánchez was not usually present for Feijóo— and made a visit to the “early risers” students of a school in the Madrid neighborhood of Sanchinarro that was not announced in his official agenda, thus avoiding a meeting with the media.
But late in the afternoon, after the plenary session in Parliament, the national president of the PP intervened before the press to ask for Sánchez’s resignation in light of the judicial news about former minister José Luis Ábalos and Begoña Gómez. Feijóo intended to launch an image of exceptionality and urgency and ended up being asked by Ayuso. He reaffirmed his “understanding” to the president of the Community of Madrid, emphasizing that he had spoken with him first, and added: “How can I not understand that in these conditions any person, simply From the emotional point of view, he is not in a condition to be able to have a meeting with the person responsible for these defamations and accusations?” The Madrid leader assured this Tuesday that the attack on Sánchez “is not a personal issue” but a political one.
Members of the PP defend that Feijóo’s position is not one of support but one of resignation. The national leadership of the PP wants to put out the fire as soon as possible and redirect its message against the Government without internal controversies overshadowing its political agenda.
Besides, It has also bothered Genoa the movement of including Sánchez’s name on the list of those appearing for the investigation commission in the Madrid Assembly about the chair directed by Begoña Gómez at the Complutense University.
“Sánchez and Ayuso are not going to stop”
The PP will also take Sánchez to the commission on the ‘Koldo case’ that they have promoted in the Senate, but since they announced it in May there is no date for his appearance. The popular They say that they are waiting for the judicial investigation to progress, but the truth is that the commission is not going as well as they expected and there are party sources who believe that the President of the Government could come out well.
However, Génova and Sol had agreed for Sánchez to go through the Senate commission and his wife through the Madrid Assembly, but Ayuso has gone further even knowing that the head of the Executive has no obligation to go and most likely won’t. A fireworks that has caused Feijóo’s entourage to have to explain why he does not take the step of calling Sánchez to his commission now.
The discomfort with the controversy unleashed by Ayuso is absolute and the reflection that spreads almost universally in the party is the following: “This is good for both of them (for Sánchez and Ayuso) and they are not going to stop”assures a member of the national leadership of the PP.
