The American multinational Microsoft announced this Wednesday the opening of a new data center in the Madrid municipality of Algetewithin the framework of the Region Cloud Spain initiative. In addition, the company has also advanced that will finance five social projects of this town, through its Community Fund in the Community of Madrid.
For its part, the Algete City Council has highlighted that the arrival of Microsoft will allow “promoting the digital skills of schoolchildren”, to improve the employability of young people of the municipality who do not have work. “The municipal government has been working hand in hand with Microsoft for months to help it with these projects it is implementing for the benefit of residents,” stressed the mayor, Fernando Romo.
Likewise, the City Council has specified that the social projects that the multinational will finance will be aimed at areas of training, sustainability and support for older people.
Bicycles, AI courses and activities for seniors
Specifically, Barrio Vivo is one of the initiatives that has benefited from this measure with ‘Singing and counting on elders’, a project to promote participation of 2,500 older people in activities cultural in the municipality, and ‘Stop Digital Gap’, to increase the autonomy of older people with technological devices.
In addition, Mama Tierra Educativa has proposed ‘Road Education Activities’, to promote road safety. Microsoft will finance the acquisition of bicycles for children who do not have themas well as the organization of theoretical training sessions throughout the school year and bicycle excursions for students starting in spring.
On the other hand, Factoría F5 has also had the opportunity to develop the “AI for the unemployed” coursesa training program in generative artificial intelligence for unemployed people without professional training in the field of information technologies to facilitate their insertion into the world of work.
Finally, FDI Foundation has proposed ‘Algete Verde: promoting biodiversity’, for the restoration of the Las Huelgas area, which represents the continuity of the project carried out last year, with two days of tree planting in January and February 2025, followed by continued maintenance work.
Awaken STEM vocations in schools
On the other hand, Microsoft will promote the project in Algete ‘Awakening STEM vocations through Minecraft’, aimed at promoting digital skills among 5th and 6th grade primary school students in the municipality’s public schools. To date, the Padre Jerónimo, Valderrey, Jonathan Galea, Virgen de Valderrabé and Obispo Moscoso schools have joined this initiative.
In relation to employability, the American multinational will launch the ‘AI Bootcamp’ projectaimed at unemployed young people in the municipality with specialized training and certification in Artificial Intelligence, Azure and Data Science. It is complemented by a mentoring plan and Speed Dating to materialize employment opportunities.
