Barcelona rules out repeating as host of the Sailing America’s Cup

Barcelona will not repeat as the venue for the sailing America’s Cup. This has been reported by both the person responsible for the event and the City Council of the Catalan capital. The Deputy Mayor for Economy, Jordi Valls, has considered the objectives met, although he has considered that repeating the event “does not contribute anything to making more investment.”

The celebration of the America’s Cup of sailing in Barcelona has taken place in the face of the general disinterest of the people of Barcelona and the criticism of neighborhood groups for the injection of at least 45 million euros by public administrations into a large private event that also did not brought the expected return for most restaurants and hotels, except those specialized in luxury tourism.

In statements to RAC-1, Valls has defended the city’s commitment to bringing the competition to Barcelona (by common agreement between the then mayor, Ada Colau; the then president, Pere Aragonès; and the Government). According to Valls, the event has reinforced the “image” of the city and has shown that the Catalan capital can organize large events again after the pandemic crisis and the process.

Valls also highlighted that Barcelona has been able to “promote sailing and the blue economy”, although he has now considered that the city “has other agendas”. “There is nothing to do with making more investment because we have already achieved the objectives,” he added.

In a statement, the Emirates Team New Zealand team, winner of the last edition and in charge of choosing the new headquarters, has considered it “difficult” to increase the number of teams participating in the next edition of the America’s Cup of Sailing in the “available space ” in Barcelona.

Event organizers have maintained that in the edition held in Barcelona, the Copa América has seen “significant growth” on several fronts. “As a result of these achievements we know that we have a number of valuable properties that we want to continue to build,” said Grant Dalton, CEO of Emirates Team New Zealand.
