The groups anti-abortionists have created a network of harassment around the Dator Clinic in Madrid, considered the flagship of abortion in Spain. There are five commercial premises that have been converted into pro-life headquarters just a few meters from the medical center.
ProVida Shelter, My First Ultrasound, Red Madre Foundation, Association to Help Pregnant Women and Madrina Foundation form an anti-abortion network that surrounds the Dator Clinic in order to avoid sanctions. Under these organizations, the self-defined “rescuers”, led by the anti-abortion doctor Jesús Poveda, are no longer on the streets harassing these women, but rather outside the premises they have rented or acquiredso they believe they are evading the law.
The Dator Clinic is located on Hermanos Gárate Street and just 30 meters away, on Pensamiento Street, is the ProLife shelterwhere they take the women who manage to stop before they go to the medical center. About 180 meters away is the My first ultrasoundwhere they convince pregnant women to listen to the heartbeat. In another direction, about 180 meters away, is the Mother Network Foundationwhich works in collaboration with pro-life associations throughout Spain. At 300 meters, the Pregnant Women’s Aid Association. And finally, about 500 meters from the clinic is the Godmother Foundation that helps women in vulnerable situations.
He modus operandi begins with the work of volunteers, whose duty is prevent women from entering the clinic and convince them not to carry out their right to termination of pregnancy. If they succeed, they transfer the women to the ProVida shelter and, from there, to Red Madre or the Madrina Foundation, which have certification from the Community of Madrid.
Although in 2022 the Government announced the Organic Law 4/2022, that modifies the Penal Code to punish street harassment of women who went to abortion centers, harassment has increased and has become more sophisticated with the creation of this network of centers that seeks to circumvent the law. The law provided for prison sentences of between three months and one year for those who harassed women who were going to abort.
