The Tenants Union rejects Pedro Sánchez in its meeting on housing: “It is a whitewash for his disastrous management”

The tenant unions announced this Tuesday that they will not attend the meeting that the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has called for this Tuesday in Moncloa with organizations and representatives of the sector to address the housing crisis in Spain. In a statement, the unions refuse to attend the meeting because “the real estate employers are also invited.” “We are not going to take a photo with the real estate employers because we cannot expect any solution from those responsible for the problem,” they say.

For the unions, who have managed to channel a good part of the discontent that thousands of people expressed in the streets of Madrid and Barcelona on October 13, in Valencia this weekend and in meetings planned in Malaga and Seville for next November 9 , this Tuesday’s meeting aims to be “a whitewash for the disastrous management of this Government in terms of housing.” “Pedro Sánchez has to decide: either he confronts the rentiers, who have multiplied rental prices with impunity and continue to kick us out of the house every day, or he continues to give them free rein with cosmetic policies,” they claim. Since the arrival of the PSOE to Moncloa, in 2018, rental prices have increased by more than 20 points.

Among these “cosmetic policies”, the union cites the youth rental bonus which, they consider, “has already ended up once in the pockets of rentiers”, or the “fake decree” on seasonal rentals which is for them a “mere record”. computer without real effects.” This registry, which the Ministry is working on and which will be ready on January 2, will force owners to have a code to be able to advertise on platforms and, in the case of seasonal rentals, they will have to justify the need for this formula.

In the statement, this group once again demands the resignation of the Minister of Housing, Isabel Rodríguez, whom they accuse of not having “wanted to meet with the tenant unions” despite having done so “multiple times with the construction companies and real estate portals.” . “We are only waiting for his resignation,” they point out in the note, as they also did in the streets a couple of weeks ago. They will not do it this Tuesday in person because, they say, “the current situation is extreme and does not allow for superficial measures or family photos” and “politicians’ time is up.”

Among their proposals, they demand a 50% drop in rents, the recovery of empty, tourist and seasonal homes for residential use, the expropriation of vulture fund homes and the dismantling of any eviction group.

This Tuesday’s meeting is part of the meetings that the Executive intends to hold, twice a year, with entities, organizations and representatives of the sector, as the central axis of its policy, with which they hope to turn housing into the fifth pillar of the State of well-being. In the previous appointment, in April, Rodríguez promised to “provide certainty, legal security and guarantees” to owners so that “they can make more homes available for affordable rental.”
