bizarre story in which the forensic science has a lot to say. The eyes are fixed these days on Bostonwhere in a matter of days there must be a hearing on a case that shocked a good part of the United States. In the background of the story is the murder of a young woman in 1988, which three decades later has seen the arrest of a man as the main suspect in the massacre.
The victim was Karen Taylor, a 25-year-old mother who on May 27 of that year was fatally attacked, with fifteen stab wounds, while she was at home in Roxbury (Boston). Her three-year-old daughter was the one who ended up answering the phone and telling her grandmother that her mother “was sleeping” and did not wake up in any way.
The investigations then failed to clarify who the aggressor was, but years later, at the beginning of this year, the police identified and arrested James Hollomana 65-year-old man who lived in Dorchester (Boston) and who two weeks ago ended up being charged with first-degree murder because he had spit in front of his house and the DNA remains They matched evidence at the crime scene.
a spit
In 1988 the police had initially found male DNA on Taylor’s fingernails, which suggested from the first moment that she had fought for her life. In the area they also recovered the cigarette butt and a sweatshirtobjects that contained important biological traces but the technology of the time was not cutting-edge enough to be able to find the aggressor.
The situation took a turn this last month, three decades after the murder, when as a result of the spittle Holloman could be linked to the crime. The remains of saliva matched the cigarette and the article of clothing, so there was no doubt about his arrest. He pleaded not guilty but the evidence was so clear that he was arrested without bail.
Now, the trial has to confirm, or not, whether Holloman is the material author of Karen’s murder and the hearing is scheduled in a matter of days, for the next day October 29. While his lawyers question whether the science can be so clear after so many years, Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden highlighted in a statement to the media the great work in research and the advances in forensic science.
