The Castilla y León biofuels plant of the Vertex Bioenergy group closed with the energy consultancy and delegated subject Creara Energy Experts the purchase and sale of more than 120 million energy savings certificates (CAEs) —an energy saving of nearly 120,000 MWh—, generated from a single energy action by the installation of a boiler heat recovery surplus from a cogeneration system.
The settlement through CAE, a certificate system that allows the marketing of energy savings generated by users who produce this reduction in polluting emissions. Energy firms are obliged to participate in payments to the National Energy Efficiency Fund (FNEE), but they can settle their annual contribution through CAEs. The translation of 1 CAE is 1 KWh.
The project of Vertex marks a milestone for this mechanism, and has been achieved through the new recovery boiler, which represents a savings of more than 25% in gas consumption for steam production in the factory. This translates into the most significant savings since the launch of the CAEs system in Spain.
The Vertex Bioenergy plant in Salamanca, which generates half of the bioethanol produced in Spain. As part of its facilities, the plant has a highly efficient cogeneration of 25 megawatts (MW)which provides heat for its production process and generates around 200,000 MWh of electricity per year that it sells to the grid.
The commissioning of this recovery boiler began in January 2024 and It reached 100% performance in the first semester.
In March of this year, Vertex Bioenergy signed a CAE agreement with Creara for the management of the certificates derived from the savings measure outlined. The firm, as a delegated entity, is accredited to manage, transmit and settle CAEs in the system. In turn, EQA has been counted on as a verification company for the project. Rodrigo Morell, from Creara Energy Experts, highlights the importance of this action, due to its “exemplary” nature for other industries.
