In the era of technology and digital transformation, diversity indices continue to be a challenge for companies in the sector. An aspect to take into account as highlighted in the recent global study ‘Kantar Brand Inclusion Index‘, which indicates how 82% of Spanish consumers affirm that brands’ commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion influences their purchasing decisions.
A marked trend from the stages prior to working in a company, as reflected in various studies that point out, for example, the insufficient access of women to STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathmatics) from the university level… and in management tasks (which has led to the recent creation of organizations such as Tech Women for Boards, to increase the presence of talent on boards of directors).
From Great Place to Work they have posed this dilemma to four Spanish companies recognized in their Ranking of the best companies to work for in the technology sector 2024, part of an international activity that leads them to consult more than 50 million people around the world. Index structured around the indicators ‘Less than 50 employees’ (with Ilitia Technologies -IT Consulting- as the winner), ’51 to 100′ (Quibim -Software-), ‘101 to 500’ (Visual MS -Software- ) and ‘More than 500 (GFT IT Consulting -Information Technologies-).
In the case of Onivia (7th in ‘Under 50’) Icíar Martínez, Director of Markets and Product, highlights her commitment to diversity “as recognized in the latest GPTW survey, with 100% unanimous in fair treatment regardless of gender or orientation sexual. One of the fundamental attributes when building the employee experience is the diversity of the people you work with, a key lever to attract and retain the team in this highly competitive and changing technological market. Lidia Nicolau, Chief People Officer of habitissimo (7th in ’51 to 100′), underlines, for its part, how “we firmly believe that diversity is key to driving growth in the technology sector. Promoting an environment that values different perspectives, genders, cultures and backgrounds not only stimulates creativity, but also facilitates the creation of more inclusive solutions.
An essential factor
Another example of a company worth highlighting is DQS (5th in ‘101 to 500’), from which Marián Hernández, its Talent Manager, points to its differentiation from other technology consultancies due to its way of managing and promoting diversity. How do they do it?: «We reflect our commitment to equity, we are committed to meritocracy and we improve our competitiveness. Diversity is a source of talent attraction that drives innovation from different points of view and creative solutions.
In U.S.T. (2nd in the ‘More than 500’ index), Juan Fontán and José Salamanca, its general directors in Spain and Latin America, emphasize the importance of “being aware that the technology sector stands out for its constant innovation and profound impact on society.” . However, you also encounter challenges in fostering diversity and inclusion in your teams. “UST, a leading digital technology services company, is at the forefront of addressing these challenges, ensuring that diversity is not just a policy, but a core value embedded in its organizational culture.”
Testimonies that are part of the importance of considering diversity as an essential part of business activity. A factor, without a doubt, of improvement to add to a sector in which, according to data from Great Place To Work, almost 9 out of 10 people employed in the technology sector are proud to say that they work in their companies, very above the 59% who affirm the same in the general population (as the institution points out: “91% of people in technology companies feel that they can be themselves in their jobs, and 90% feel that their superiors They trust their professionalism without having to supervise the tasks they perform.
